There has been a recent accident in temperate latitudes (no where near the tropics or subtropics), involving several kiteboarders that were lofted in a sudden storm event.
All suffered fractures and other injuries requiring hospitalization. One person was paralyzed as a result of major factures.
Dangerous storms, squalls, water spouts, whatever ARE NOT solely a Florida phenomena as some fools have alledged on a few occassions.
WHEREVER YOU RIDE, STUDY THE WEATHER FORECAST AND MONITOR THE WEATHER CONTINOUSLY.
PRACTICE TOTALLY DEPOWERING BOTH MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY TO TRY TO REDUCE REACTION TIME.
TOTALLY DEPOWER EARLY, DON'T TRY TO FLY OUT OF IT OR WAIT UNTIL THE EMERGENCY IS FULLY UPON YOU
No areas or riders from PRO to newbie are totally exempt from unstable weather, believe it. Frequency of such storms will vary with location but most areas do have them over time so stay aware.
More about these sad accidents will be posted in time but for now, think carefully about this post and act upon it.
More about weather planning and monitoring at the links below. If you are new seek quality instruction from a certified instructor. Suggestions to think about in selecting an instructor appear at the link below. If you are serious about kiteboarding you should read them:

Three guys getting busted up with one getting paralyzed in what may have been a readily avoided accident is boring?
This young guy's life and likely several others have been altered permanently, but may not have been IF people had talked about this boring stuff (weather, etc.), a bit more. They say this area DOESN'T HAVE this sort of weather this time of year. How many times does it take?
You may not avoid weather hazards with your outlook but avoiding my posts is easy, don't click on them.

Why would U want to hear something interesting like this?
"The Virginia Beach accident"
2 weeks ago what I heard a heavy weight flyer mixed up the front and backline.
After he launched the kite the kite went donwn and sweeping through the power zone
meanwhile getting dragged through the jetty loaded with sharp rocks,
leaving him really brused up.
I heard at least 4 people saw it.
Anybody on that how is the flyer doing?:?:

Wow, that is one lucky dude. Virginia Key Beach is a rock wonderland, with great big boulders in groins at regular intervals and tons of people often enough. It is tight, technical launch to say the least. The guy is fortunate to just be banged up and not laid up in a hospital.
I had hoped kook proof connectors would have put this sort of easily avoided accident into the past. Maybe if we don't talk about it, people will get the idea and change? Damn, we already tried that prior to 2003, I forgot. Guys kept getting mashed up and access threatened & lost, next idea.

Why do you always keep going on about accidents, deaths and so on???
Last year about 25000 people died in the EU driving cars...some 100 whatever cycling...couple dozens skiing...handfull skydiving and basejumping...quite recently a lot of people just flying charter...and about 60% of all people dying last year because of the results of smoking cigarettes...
We do have a very save sport in my opinion...

For the second time today, checkout the several hundred articles at:
http://kiteforum.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=131
http://fksa.org
Tons of articles on Surf Expo, numerous kiteboarding competions/parties, new gear reviews, light wind tips, travel logs, etc. etc. lots of content with NOTHING to do with safety.
Please look over all this stuff for a second before making conclusions about what has been written. It took a lot of time with the goal of providing entertainment and credit to the folks that participated in this stuff and put it on.
