How? Do you start from a Boat.

Postby freezorburn » Wed Mar 01, 2006 7:50 pm

I'll be in a area this summer "Raritan bay" where I can easily get in a boat and get out on the water. But I don't have a place to start from on Land.

The boat can drop me off and they'll fish or chase me around the water.

I need tips on how to do this. I have a few ideas but I don't want to be floundering out in the bay tring to rig stuff. I need advice from people who have accutualy done this. Thanks

I learned how to do this i France during a week of lessons. We body dragged from the boat 2km out in onshore conditions.

Pump up kite on beach. Rig all the lines and bar as if you are going to launch. Bar down wind. Carfully wrap lines on bar and tie off with some line.
Deflat the LE, put bar in middle in front of LE and roll up kite from tips to middle. Put bar on top of package and tie off agian.

Put it all in the boat.

When you get out in the boat. Take bar off and start pumping up LE. The kite will open up. have a helper hold kite and bar with lines so it wont tangle.

Jump in the water with bar and keep kite in boat. Swin out unrolling the lines. Keep sidewind of boat. The boat will be drifting away so eventually he will be downwind Your helper in the boat can now put the kite in the water LE down. He can start the boat and manoever so that he can lift the kite up and help you launch.

We did this with 3 kiters and one skipper. Zodiac type boat. All of us kiters had only one day on the beach flying. We were bodydragging and dumped the kites in the water. 2 line kites. We learned how to get the kite out of the water that day. It was 2km to the beach and we were in the atlantic....It would have taken along time to drift to the beach so you had motivation to get the kite up and BD to the beach.

I´ve been thinking of getting one of those boats to get to local spots that are not accessable by road.

Right-on,,,

good advice,,

In time you'll find more ways:

rig on the beach, just dump the lines in a bucket (saves twists)

jump in the water with the bar, do nothing,,,let the boat putt putt to window's edge...no swimming

Tow the mofo off the beach (kite on boat inflated, mofo lays on his board)

boat to an upwind point or spit,,,,,,beach launch then boat train...

There are many ways...

One fixed rule: boat always handles the kite.

Pick up, boat gets kite rider winds his way in...

Jet drives and swim platforms make it a breeze.

The boat method should be manditory,, it takes mistakes off the beach.

About 1/4 way through the movie there is a great demonstration how this is done.

Never thought of the bucket idea. Smart, like the guys doing crab fishing on Discovery.

Never thought of how to get picked up by boat, but thought boat would grab kite first, drag it onboard and and then motor to kiter, staying upwind of lines. Kiter rolls up lines when on board.

Any one use those kite line organiser thingys i´ve seen on the web?

freezorburn, Good luck in Raritan Bay. Not the best place to kite. Not so safe, shit water, and current. The police have given people a hard time once in a while for being there. Try to drive a little south to either Sandy Hook State park. Only 20 minutes or so. A half an hour or so south of that is Seaside Park and a half hour past there is LBI. Much cleaner and safer with kiter around to make it safer.

Do what you will but I won't ride in Raritan at all.

Point taken,
The Raritan is a realy big place and I've seen places to kite that are incredible and clean/safe. It's just almost impossible to get to these areas by land.

Thanks for the great advice everyone!!!
