what camera do you take on kiting vacations?

I need to buy a new digital camera and thought I should get a good camera that is at least weather proof if not water proof. Your Ideas would be very helpful.

Waterproof to 10 feet.

Not water "resistant", water proof. I haven't dunked it and taken photos, but a guy here in Floripa has a normal yellow workmen's hardhat with the exact camera mounted on the front lip. He is hilarious riding around here on a strapless surfboard, old ass Cabrinha C-kite, one handed snapping photos of other kiters.

I put a gigabyte card in mine, haven't used it up in my 4mths in Brazil...

I went back and reviewed the old post but did not see how to mount it to your wrist or bar.

I have one of the original pentex optio water proof cameras. One thing to note is when a company says the camera is water proof that does not imply that it can take pictures under water (not supposed to use the buttons when camera is submerged) it implies that when you drop it in the water that it won't die. Mine can be submerged under water up to 30 feet and is shock proof.

If you want to use a camera in/under the water buy one that you can get a housing for there not that expensive and you can get heeps of add ons like flashes, lenses and handles (for that water pic of you framed on the wall) and the best part is you can use them when you go diving or swiming to take pics of cool fish when there's no wind on your kite vacation.

i only have one cam and its a canon 400d, no freaking way would i be mounting that badboy on my kite!

I think that unless you are keen on shooting while riding, you should go with a slr, 35mm or digital. You will need the ability to adjust to the conditions and your taste for composition more than you will ever need to submerge the camera 30ft.

babars got it, find the perfect camera, then worry about waterproofing it. the after market companies that have been building housings for years have got it down to a science, its their business after all.

my personal choice came down to two things, AA batteries, and a min 5x zoom. AAs can be found anywhere, and small cameras that you can toss in a pack or a pocket (crucial for feeling light on your feet) generally have 3x zoom which is pretty useless.

a waterproof bag with a glass window costs less than $50, housings are significantly more, if your standing in the water shooting your friends kiting itll be perfectly safe
