I saw him at a wind festival in France. He is amazing, Always without shirt whatever is the temperature.
He controls one kite per hand plus a third one attached to his belt.
Incredible old man!

His name is Ray Bethell, a good friend, master kite flyer and extraordinary man, here is a short film biography of him.

Ray is an incredible kite flyer, especially if there is someone to appreciate his art nearby.
He is not about ego at all, its his way of expressing real joy for being alive.
He has a crazy, wicked sense of humour too, this is a typical email from him, below.

"I normally don't pass on any porn (which I accidentally received); however, I felt that you're old enough and mature enough to handle this one. At least I hope you are.

If you just delete it, which of course is your privilege, then you will never know.

I actually downloaded that movie Rezinga and then flicked it off after about 3 mins, and I really like flying trick kites just like that, its boring to watch though. Good flyer, who is it, one of the Eola boys?
Notice there is no crowd watching.

When Ray flys, people are transfixed and drawn to watch him like moths to a light, it is amazing to see.

Ray flys 3 kites better than 3 individuals flying as a team can. When he flew at the Lakes Entrance Sport Kite World Cup in 1995 in Australia, he was allowed to enter and compete in the teams event, he won it, and was awarded the first even 10 score from all the judges!!!

He was on the flying field by 7.30-8.00am and never left until dark, I was so amazed by him I eventually had to go over and say hello and offer him something to drink, I was at the event as a spectator. We have been close friends ever since.

I watched him fly to Bette Middler singing rendition of "the wind beneath my wings" and saw several people in the crowd moved to tears, I saw that again 2 years later in Adelaide, he represents everything good in kite flying, and he brings something special to every Festival he attends.

Ray is in his early 80's now but he has stopped counting birthdays and will not tell you how old he is if you ask. His girlfriend Dolores is 82, and Ray is as deaf as a doorknob, has been for around 10/12 years, some sort of rare virus.

In Vanier Park in Vancouver where he is a local flyer and attraction, the City has erected a bench with dontations from kiteflying friends from a round the world in his honor so that people can sit and watch him fly when he is at home. If there is wind, sub 15 knots Ray is out flying.

The guy is truly something. I have seen him in a kite festival and it shadowed everything else.
