where in USA

Hello

thinking of going kiting in America, where is a genuinely very windy place to go end July/start August for 2 weeks. looking for somewhere where there is a daily thermal wind or really strong stats. Must be near (ish) an international airport (coming from UK) and have some nightlife or other things to do if there is no wind.

Hatteras in North Carolina..but I don't think it has real nightlife

You could fly in to SFO in San Francisco,California. We have a few good spots all around the bay area about 1hr away for each other or less . Chrissy Fields in S.F., 3rd ave in San Mateo, And Sherman Island in the delta. You can check Bayareakiteboarding.com for more info about CA bay area riding spots and ask any questions you my have there. Also there is a lot of night life in S.F. and area citys as well. HTH

interested in Hatteras but www.windfinder.com has July/Aug as the worst months of the year for wind and a really poor stats, is this fair or can you ignore this data ? looking for somewhere as windy as say Brazil or Cabarete in season.

Not the best time of year for the east coast in the USA. Hatteras is no exception. It's possible you could get a few days in Hatteras but most of us stay away that time of year. It's kind of out in the middle of no where w/ no night life to speak of. Good luck!

Corpus can be good in July/ August but it's hit or miss. Some years are good, some are crap. I would say the best bet in the US for that time of year would be the Gorge. The water is as warm as it gets there and usually the summer months are the best there.

In July / August the most dependably windy places are on the Pacific Coast of the USA. They are:

1. San Francisco Bay. A large bay surrounded by hills and mountains that gets strong thermal winds. The water and the air are cold. The city is big and has a lot to do.

2. The Columbia River Gorge. A long river / lake at the bottom of a canyon through the mountains that can get VERY strong thermal winds. The water is not too cold at that time of year and the air temperature is pleasant, but most people still wear wetsuits. The nearest big city with an airport is Portand, Oregon, about a two hour drive away, but there is a nice outdoor-sports oriented town in the middle of the Gorge called Hood River. If the wind doesn't blow, there is a lot of good hiking, biking, glacier snowboarding, etc.

I believe that d0uglass has the answer.

During high summer in the USA you need thermals and pressure differentials for max wind - the Gorge and SF area are mecca from June until early September for this reason. In addition to features mentioned by d0uglass:

SF - you can also go to the "Delta", Pacific coast... plus TONS of things to do either urban or outdoor adventure, go up to the Sierras, Yosemite, etc. etc.

Gorge: you can also explore the Pacific coast, Portland, etc.

The key is to identify the weather pattern and what cycle is happening just prior to/or upon arrival and then sort out you activities and exact locations from there. For example, it might be light wind in the Gorge but it's going off on the coast. Get in touch with someone with local knowledge right away and adapt as you go. iKitesurf offers daily human reports and predictions for the Gorge - not sure if you need to subscribe for that feature.

You may end up having 2 weeks of solid conditions at one spot, but it would be a shame not to experience other places and features of either of these areas.
