new kite surfer, looking for advice

Postby kiter7 » Sun Mar 18, 2012 7:21 pm

hello,
I am relatively new to kite surfing and want to buy my first kite, board and harness. I'm a girl, i weigh 65Kg last time i checked and regular wind is about 10-15 knots where i live. I was thinking of the Slingshot Rally 10M, Mystic Bruna Harness and finally a Burnotti Riptide board 130x38.

What do u guys think? Any advice about the gear would be great!

Thank you :D

welcome!

sounds all nice. but my advice is to try a harness in a shop and see which is the most comfortable for you...try them on and hang with your whole weight into a bar...and see if it hurts you somewhere!

Also consider trying a seat harness, lots of beginners find it easier on ribs.
As for the board size, you may go a little bigger for the light winds you have.
Go kiting :thumb:

hi kiter7,
with your weight almost any kite is just fine. rally is good for beginner. buy any kite which is more graphically attractive, cheaper and available for you. and buy a waist harness unless you are chubby, but try it first for comfort anyway.

Heyy guys, thanks for all of the helpful advice :D
i just wanted to be sure the measurements of the kite and board are ok with my weight(65kg) and my wind range of (10-15knots).
I've heard good things of the Slingshot Rally 10M, and Burnotti boards. its just that the board doesn't come in bigger than 130x38cm.

What do u think? Should i go for it?

My heights 168cm, if that will help :p

North is the only harness. You can buy and try many, but they are the best, most comfortable,....by far...Trust me. Do not waste your money on anything else. I would also recommend Globe Kites. The Trix has been reviewed as the best beginner to expert kite by unbiased publication. Call Lightwave Dave from their website. You may as well start with the best....I have been riding since the beginning and all other kites year # may be ahead, but the kites are just following along with what GK came up with 10 years ago if you've been paying attention.

Hi Kiter7, it all sounds good with the exception of the board size in 10 knots. You're light but, in my opinion, something bigger will help you stay upwind. Also, if the wind drops below 10, it's easier to go home. You have, I think, to understand if the average wind is more towards the 15s or more towards the10s. In the second case, maybe you can also consider an 11. I live on the lake, we normally have thermal winds varying from 10 to 20 (max). Average wind is 12-13. Girls actually ride 10 or, more often, 11. Boys from 12 to 14.

FYI - can't comment on the pull of the Rally (Open Delta C) compared to my Takoon Nova2 from 2006, but I weigh 65-68kg and find my 12m perfect for our conditions 10-16kts. My next kite down is an 8m, which should really be 9m to have some overlap.

I too wonder if your board is a bit too small for the light winds you mention. Mine is 137x38 (an older board though) which fits perfectly with my kite size. If you decide to go with the 10m, which should do you fine too, I would definitely look for a bigger board. Nothing worse than working the kite madly just to keep going.

Not sure if it's big enough for what you're looking for, but North makes a women's board, the Soleil, available in 134x39. We also make our higher end strap/pad kit, the Entity, in a smaller size for smaller feet.
