Kiteboarding's verson of a AC-45

Postby Bille » Tue Apr 24, 2012 2:19 am

OK here's what i Want / Need !! :

I need Kiteboarding's verson of a AC-45 catamaran.
It can go Really FAST in hardly Any wind, (20 knots in 10 knots of wind).

And it should break down to nearly the same size of our stock LEI's ;
say like an Ozone Edge X 2, or so ...

I " Don't " (( WANT )) to go 50mph on the water ;
I wanna go 20 -25 & all Maxed out in 10 knots of wind !!

So -- what do i gotta buy or make ?

well the edge will do it so will a cabrinha etc.
The challenge is the board.
It will take a good raceboard and big fins, plus/minus whatever you have to do to adapt it to your needs.

This is Really COOL and i'm Blown away at todays gear ; i had NO idea !!

I didn't even know they Made a 17m Edge ; looks like i should read a bit
more about the light wind gear available now-days, hardly ever needed
where i board.

I wonder what the point of the board size limit is ?
Kinda puts an anchor on a 212lb guy like me !

I Like the shot at the bottom ; racing the AC-45
Scuttlebutt News wrote:We have a box rule for the board: Maximums of 70cm wide, 190cm long, 50cm maximum fin length.
ALSO -- Why does the X10 by Nash only come in 12m and 18m ?
That kite has a LOT of struts ; if it was me, i'd replace them ALL with carbon.

america cup class ac45 is a lot faster than a kite, so is the Olympic class tornado. And there are plenty of one of a kind boats much faster than kites like l'hydroptere, idec, orange 2, the big cats and tris.

I love watching the ac45's they groan and vibrate like they are going to explode any second and that's how they are supposed to work.

once wind gets above 30 knots all these boats tip over, which is why the top speed is still a kite, but in a race, the ac45 can't be beat.

those cats are running more downwind without their gennakers deployed for some reason, the kite is closer hauled and able to get a better angle

There's no class of boat faster than an AC45, this includes kites. Can't wait for the ac72 in July.

Hope you're a fan of these racing cats, they are fantastic to watch. There doesn't have to be a competition between sailboats and kites, I love them both.

I'd have to ask Bryan what the deal was as I was not there. I guess they were training before races. I doubt they would let him kite that close during the event.
yes I enjoy watching AC series and do not really care which one is faster. what amazes me is the performance of the current kite racing gear. for rather small investment we can go really fast.
i'm glad AC went to cats though. always watched AC races, but now they have made it as thrilling to watch as any fast paced sport out there. finals in SF will be awesome

That is Johnny Heineken out with the AC-45s in that pic. SF Bay is the training ground for both.
