Modify a North bar?

Postby WildDuke » Wed Nov 28, 2012 3:50 am

When you pull the depower rope on a quad line north bar the red safety line goes really slack. Has anyone modified the setup to fix this? How about a length of bungy from the Y connection point to half way along the safety line, so when the the depower rope is pulled the bungy retracts and keeps the safety line taught.

Can anyone see a problem with this?

lots of companies use a line with a bungee built in,
just swap one out,
just make sure you get/make it the right length

i used a SS but any will work

My understanding is that you should have some slack in the fifth line anyhow for the fifth line kites anyhow. Is it a fifth line kite or an evo or fuse? Oh you did say quad bar sorry.

It is really an annoyance i agree....North should have addressed that dangling issue for 2013

Same thing happens with trust bar 5 line...with high "Y"

That is one thing i like about the mini 5th on my Core sensor bar...zero slack when depower pulled

I believe that North should come up with something better in 2014
Red line dangling .....we don't want no more of that

To minimize...you can reduce the amount of available depower...to only 4 inches....
...by moving cleat upward

This trick only works if you have long arms...and can reach it the tab to pull it in
Heck if you have...very long arms...you can slide the cleat all the way up..and never pull the depower

Only get your depower from pushing the bar away
That is the only way to always have that red safety line in check 100%

Are those stretchy mini fifth lines just a regular amsteel line with some elastic material pulled into the core? I wonder if you can just add it yourself. Just feed the elastic in and sew the ends of the elastic in place?

For the record, we used to have a bungee on the 5th line that would take up that slack in the red line when the depower was pulled. In 2007 we found that the bungee would pull the nose of the kite down in really light wind, potentially causing the kite to Hindenburg and generally decreasing performance, so we stopped using the bungee (at least that was the reasoning they gave us at the time).

So we could give up a little bit of performance to get the "clean" look that the bungee gave us, or we could have a little slack in the 5th/mini 5th. If you don't like that slack, you can put a bungee into the line to pull it taut. As long as it doesn't pull the front lines beyond where they should be I don't think it should affect performance too much, especially on the 4 line bar. I don't know what material bungee you should use, but be aware that it needs to be strong, as all of the load will be transferred to that line when you activate the release.
