How do you know how much air to pump on the kite in order not to under/over inflate?

You know those tents that you just pull out of the bag, give a shake, and BAM!!!... instant house! ?
Why can't they make kites like that? Somebody should get right on it.
To answer the OP, I follow the manufacturer's instructions for the kite. It varies by kite design. I'll go to the max in cooler conditions (8-10) and less in hot conditions (6-8). I use the pump gauge as a guide, but have gotten in the habit of flicking the kite so I know what it sounds like when it has the right amount of air in it. The gauges for me are correct more often than not...but when they're wrong, they're way off.

Good one !!!
I pump my kite 8-10 psi, never less then 8. I do know I pump it more then avarage (at least compared to the guys on my beach) but i have never had any problems.
If the kite is not one pump, then the strus get a bit more pressure (10-13 psi).
If the kite falls into the water it cools the air very quickly, which causes pressure to decrease. On the other hand, when I started practicing kiteloops, I pump with slightly less pressure because my kite slamed into the water real hard, so I rather have a jellyfish kite then a punctured kite.

With Cabrinha kites, they recommend you pump enough air into the kite so that when you stand it on it's side, it has no tendency to fold or buckle in the middle.
You should gradually put air into the kite on a no-wind day and keep checking it until you can stand the kite on it's side and it no longer folds.
When you have found the pressure that does this, squeeze the leading edge of the kite with your fingers and remember how taut it is for the next time. Most experienced kiters know by squeezing the leading edge, or flicking it with a finger (like a drum) and they can tell by the sound.
You seem to have been very slowly getting into kiting, which can be a good thing, but over the last three years, you should have learned many of the things you need to know. There should be a manual with the Contra kite, which explains about the correct pressure and also about the safety leash.

They guy is obviously trying tself teach and already had a kitemare in offshore winds.(see other post) another victim of "But it Now" on Ebay-coming to your beach soon!
Get lessons or do not ride at my beach!
Its as simple as that.
* You got a harness poncho, or is it a pair of levis and a belt?
(True story, I saw it on my beach!)
Belt was through the chicken loop

i agree with the post from, RONNIE, put it on it's side and if it holds it shape you don't need any more air, as far as the gauges with the measuring of the air presure, i've been to Cabarete and Cardon beach Miami and nver saw anyone using those things i have one and never used it.

I'm on Slingshot RALLY's & RPM's. I always put the same in no matter what the conditions, 8 or 9LB's. Never had a bladder or cell 'let go' in ten years of slingshottage, but I've never really hammered a kite into the sea nose down to really try this sorrowing experience out (and not that hard-core enough)
