Minimum water temp. How low do you go?

I will probably make Kiteforums stupidest questions for asking this, but here goes. My wetsuit is an Oneill 2 piece set with a 3mm farmer john and a 3mm shorty. Is that going to be as warm as a solid 6/3, or am I loosing anything with the two 3mm layers?

you can totally add together layers like that but . . . sooooo uncomfortable difficult to move, so hard to get the layers on and off, and if the 3m fits well against the skin it will be too tight with the shorty under it. When I get wetsuits I have to take into account layers I will wear under it. you should be warm but a 6/3 is more comfortable. when layering I like putting a wool or poly liner under the wetsuit, instead of stacking two sets of neoprene more comfortable and almost as warm as 2 sets of neoprene.

I don't really care how cold the water is but 7°C / 44°F is my limit for air temp.

I just cant hack the re-heats anymore.

I dont understand Tone, what is " -10+ " ?
My guess is you mean you are not out when it is less than +10F (-12C) ?

Or ? Water or air or both ?

It sounds REALLY cold though, -12C !
I've been out in -7C / 19F air (water just about zero) which is on the very limit IMO, because everything freezes instantly, when water sprays on you, your harness, your bar and everything...
On the other hand, it does not seem likely that you mean below +10C either, as here most dont even wear boots nor gloves and definitely not a hood..

This thread is so confusing. With people writing temperatures and wind speeds in both imperial and metric units, and some don't even write what units the measure is in. Some threads where there is a discussion about wind speeds, it gets really confusing, as people operate with knots, meters per second, mph, Beaufort, and maybe even feet per second.

There should be a way to write units in forums so that the unit automatically converts to the settings on the computer it is being red on. Like if my computer was set on metric units, every temperature written in a thread would be converted to Celsius on my computer, so when I read it, all I read is Celsius temperatures.

This is not uncommon and while what you suggest is a nice idea why not educate yourself on the conversions? I suppose it comes easy to me as I went through school at a time Canada was switching from imperial to metric, and my work requires translation of units on a hourly basis. I wouldn't trade my ability to translate for a computer program...

In western NY we kite year round. But, if the air temp is below freezing, ice can form on lines and even clog the safety releases. So, it's not wise to risk that. I am looking for a good dry glove system. Can you please comment on your experiences and give recommendations.

you guys are savs. around these parts (sf bay) the rule of thumb is if the air and water temps don't add up to 100 we pass. that's F, btw.

evidently that rule is broken regularly in other areas but how long can one last in the water in the event of a breakdown?
