ever watched shark week? There are many many Tigers just outside Waikiki.
One comes close, all hell breaks loose. Just this one was spotted, all others are just laughing out of sight, waiting for a sushi revenge....
... sorry... :o

8 million annual visitors, this is a multibillion tourism industry. The Major cash cow of Hawaii. We can not afford to have tourists being killed by sharks while enjoying the beautiful beaches.

nobody is getting killed (waikiki).... but think about how many millions of people play in the ocean these days. And how many are getting eaten?
I like the tagging of the sharks, that way you can check before you go out, in case you worry. ( not you personally, just saying in general)
Hope they don't go nuts, like they did in the 80's I think it was,.. killing sharks.

PS: quit killing Whales and Dolphins,... wasn't the Tsunami warning enough? Respect and care the ocean(s). Just like the movie Abyss,... Guess they don't learn.
Let the sharks do what they do, just be aware of them.
And if they attack, let's learn from it.
I think UH is doing a great thing by tagging them.
check map to see where they are

PS: Thanx to the Hawaiian lifeguards and water patrol ,.. best in the world to keep us safe..from fish and ourselves

Here's a much more interesting article on the shark "sighting" on Maui a couple days ago.

This crap seems to be happening almost on a weekly basis lately.

Those buggers don't shy away from paddle boards, kayaks, or kiters.

MAUIWatch
SHARKWatch Update: MAUIWatch's Malika Dudley spoke with the woman who had a shark encounter yesterday fronting the Mana Kai Resort. No stranger to ocean activities, she's paddled the Molokai channel, done competitions in Tahiti, dives and has been around other types of sharks before. She describes the shark she encountered as "aggressive" and a "beast" - the water was crystal clear that morning, lots of people enjoying the ocean. She said it came so quick, she saw it out of the corner of her eye. It rammed her board and she fell in the water. She thought "This is it. I'm going to die today." The shark then bit her board and started swimming toward her friend. Her friend screamed "The shark is over here, get on your board!" She got back on her board, yelled at her friend to get on her knees and started praying out loud, that's when the shark (which she describes as being bigger than her board, with distinguishable stripes) came back to ram her board again. She said she was in a state of shock. That's when two ladies, responding to their cries for help, paddled out toward them and, in her words, "they were big together" while paddling back to shore. She says the shark followed them all the way in. "I know I'll be back in the water, I just don't know when that is going to be. I feel sick to my stomach. My girlfriend saved my life and those two ladies are my heroes."

Background info:
The shark encounter occurred yesterday afternoon (2/9/14) a little after 1pm. DLNR closed the beaches from Ulua to Charley Young for 2 hours while Ocean Safety patrolled the area. The beaches were reopened a little after 3pm.

We have a well established Great White population on Cape Cod nowadays. We had one attack two summers ago ( bad bite too legs in shin area, not deadly, very lucky to be alive). The last fatality here was 1937. I never really thought about sharks when I windsurfed, but now that I kite they concern me a little more.
