Calling all campers.....

Hello....Bill-eee, and your nemesis,

(rhymes with go-fight'in...)

time to chime in....

heads to be chopped

and vans to be whopped.....

As did the "nemesis" when he 3d tattooed one in the parking lot.

Then again I think he was distracted by his cigarette.

The Biggest most Major Risk of getting hurt at 6-mile, is
just before the wind switches to Off-shore, (from S-SE to SW) and the thermals
get blown across the beach from out of the desert . Then it will sometimes switch
back to S-SE, (be careful Here) ---- the wind is trying to Sucker Ya into a $12,000
life-flight ride !!

And of course the unstable prefrontal storm fronts can be dangerous ; but that
could be a problem most anywhere !!

Last year was a Wash for me & kiting ; after i broke my second fake leg at
Mohave, i basically stuck to Hang gliding for the rest of the year. This year
is gonna be a Good one for kiting, now that i got legs that Ain't gonna break !!
Did i just Hex myself , saying that ?

Many years ago we were fortunate enough to kite out there. We also taught a few friends to kite out there in the middle of the lake but we tried to always use a boat or less effectively for that environment, our jetski to take them far away from main kite beach launch and followed students for miles downwind in the middle of the lake with radio and rescue support,(always empty of boat traffic once wind starts spanking) It is a more expensive and time intensive way to learn, but certainly the safest to avoid hazards of treacherous shorelines and to preserve the main launch spot. Maybe have a friend with a jet ski or boat bring you up to another upwind beach and do a water launch/ downwinder away from the main area.

Outside of the lei kite eating cactus, thorny bush, there are heaps of hazards for a kiters body as well. We would actually drag launch thorn impervious twin skins up to wind altitude off of tiny non launch beaches behind our jet boat back in the day.

The locals are very cool/helpful but the small launch area can only handle so many kiters launching and landing. As mentioned, the regular launches have many hazards and are much more suited to advanced riders. The locals are understandably concerned about influx of kiters not familiar with the tentative nature of the main kite launch of their area. It's not like they have heaps of alternate launch areas.
Good winds Mohave Crew.

Hey guys,

What about the wind in summer (right now). Is it mainly thermal?
Wind finder says 10mph for Monday. Will it thermal and be kiteable or is wind finder accurate.

Thanks for helping

Thermal -------------YES

Wind finder -------- NO ; that one is good for figuring long range possibilities, but
not so accurate at Mohave.

This one is good for Spring and summer :

So when they say 30% chance for rain ; that's Not good ! :(

You get an OK chance for kiting, if it says 20% or less ; a 75-mile drive
from Vegas, and i Want GOOD odds or i'll do something else that day.

Also , it's got to say South or anything East of south, and 13-mph or better
or i stay home.

I love when I see this topic come up. The kiting at that lake is hands down the best I've found. The epic walks, burnt/cut feet, devil wind, and the "other" locals are just some of the costs of doing business out there.

Glad your getting some this summer Bill. Tell the peeps I say hi

Alright,
Am planning on checking the spots tomorrow Aug 4th 2014.

I have my gear and a car.

I will only kite if I see any locals at the spot. (A little too experienced to do anything otherwise)

Am a decent expert kiter and will be glad to help/assist any local kiters.

Let me know if anyone is interested in coming along. (My car, no gas money required)

Best

Re: Kitesurfing Las Vegas! (Mohave Windy Months..???)

Can anyone tell me (when the windy season begins) for the Mohave?

I'm new to the desert and kite the Cali coast most, but looking forward to finding some new territory while living in Vegas!

Thanks,
Scott

Well, this Friday is looking good for some S! 15mph+. Air temps in mid 70's. Water still a bit chilly. But looking like a great day.

Really any time its blowing S is great for 6 mile. Just look at the forecast for that area and when they predict S, it's 'usually' pretty accurate. PM me your email and I can let you know when we're going down. We usually wait for the water to warm up a bit more so full suits aren't needed. We're spoiled lol.
