I was thinking about a kite vacation to Cabarete again but am worried about the wind. I went there in 2010 for a week to learn how to kite. There was no wind for a week. I paid for some lessons and did not learn a thing. Now I am an avid intermediate kiter and wish to return but looking at the wind stats on windfinder it never looks very promising. Am I missing something. Is perhaps there an afternoon thermal wind at Cabarete that does not show up on windfinder? The prices are great for the hotels and food and the scenery ,water and people are great but maybe I should go to a more expensive southern Caribbean spot such as Aruba, Barbados, St Lucia, or the Grenadines were the wind stats seem more reliable in the winter months. Cabarete seems to have better winds in the summer according to wind finder.

We had the same experience in April, I believe the same year. Someone said it was an El Nino year. I would not risk it again, especially since some think an El Nino is building again now.

Try Brasil. Wind is a lot more constant from July till Nov.
I have been to Cabarete at 2008 and since then twice at Brasil.

+1!
And TAM has direct flights from Miami to Fortaleza from May onwards.
Cheers

The wind in Cabarete is tops!!
I just kited 6 out of 8 days 28 Feb - 7 March. I'm about 145 lbs and rode a 8m most of the time!
A friend has been there since Feb 3rd and kited basically everyday!

I was in Cabarete Feb 23rd - Mar 2nd and kited 6 of 8 days, powered 10m (180lbs) every afternoon. The day we left may even have been good which would have made 7 of 8.
This is my third year in a row being there Feb or March for a week and it has been good.
No guarantees but for me it has been good.

The peak season may be the summer but the rest of the year still has very strong winds.
