Getting a knot out of a line

Postby Toby » Sat May 24, 2014 5:50 pm

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I just read about an interesting way to get a knot out of a flying line.

make the line wet and put it into the freezer!

you maybe have to repeat it several times, but at one point you will be able to untie it with your finger nails.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea. Because when the water freezes it will expand and push the knot apart.

I usually just pick at it for hours, will try this next time!

I recently had to get a tough knot out of one of my back lines. Got a hammer and a wooden board (cutting board from kitchen). Microwaved some water to boiling, let it cool 30 seconds, then let the knot soak in the warm water for 5 minutes. At that point, I took the knot, put it on the wooden board, and gently tapped the knot with the hammer on each side until the knot kept flattening out. This expands and contracts the knot, loosening it up. After several minutes of tapping the various sides of the knot, I was able to use my fingers to loosen the knot manually and eventually undo it.

Only thing that concerns me is if the knot had all of the tallow removed from the line since the area of the former knot is paler than the rest of the line.

Freezing is interesting if you are willing to spend the time to go through various freeze/thaw cycles.

I have removed many knots for people. It is not difficult with a small pair of pliers. Usually I wet the line and I think this helps.

It rarely takes more than two or three minutes.

Be sure to get pliers with serations (grooves) on the gripping surfaces. They cost maybe $5 US.

The hammer method just makes me feel better when working a knot out of a line though.

I will have to try the freezer method,

Pliers with serrations sound like they could be rough on the line.

I use the simplest method. Just put the knot in your mouth and gently chew on the knot with your back teeth. It uses the same principle as the hammer or other instruments to bang on the knot, but your back teeth are very gentle on the knot, In addition, you can do it anywhere with no tools.
