There are a few sides to the SUP debates. Ocean or Lake. Here on the lakes its simple. People like em for flat water, and I'm fine with it. Those that want waves are in for a lot of work. We just don't get waves without a lot of wind. We get the odd surfer, and I'm sure I'll run into a SUP in the waves one day, but they work so hard, I'll give em any wave they can catch. Its such an obvious inequity, when your burning around from crest to crest and back upwind all on a plane with little airs in between that you have the better half of the fun equation. I no longer even inquire as to why in hell are they doing that!? Can I see the benefit to having one.... You bet. Probably a purchase I'll make in the next year. Just to get my wife and kids out to the beach more often. Any excuse to play with my kids in the water. Great cottage toys.

Ocean........... Sharing waves with kites and surfers................. I can see loads of conflict, but mostly between SUP and surfer. We just have the mobility to pass on by and look elsewhere. Point breaks.... Yeah I can see why peeps be hatin.

Dunno for beach breaks , but when you have reef breaks SUP opens up lots of new ridable wave points that previusly unreachebale/ too far away to paddle out with a surf board. Ever since I got a sup surf in 2009 I discovered so many new empty break points...so easy to paddle out and explore.

Advantages:
Easy and fun to ride small mushy waves
Easy and fun to ride big powerfull waves
Easy to paddle out and discover new surf breaks
Rotation with fellow sup surfers is super fast, progression alot faster than surfing
Spend more time surfing than waiting
Tons of setups and board shapes/ size material choices from 7' up to 14' +
For smaller waves , Can surf in very shallow waters
Etc...

What are you implying?

Not sure what the hate is on paddleboarding, it is not as exciting as kiting, but beats walking. I can walk to the bay and drop my board in a bit easier than carrying a boat and the oars. From an exercise perspective, you have to paddle really hard to keep your heart rate up in a running range. I think rowing has an edge there, but I have to do more hamstring stretching to do extensive rowing. SUP is something you can do vertically at least.

I think adrenaline sports can kind of ruin you for boring exercise, but there's a place for both.

It has be one board
It has to be small enough to surf great lakes in over 35 knots
Big enough to stand on in flat water
I has to fit in Grand Caravan say max 9'6''
