DIY. foils in action 157 views no Vids?

Postby Bajadrifty » Wed Feb 18, 2015 7:37 pm

, Do they not work? I just spent a bunch of time building this foil and want some inspiration. The Hawians have shown us some of the goods. Seems like there is a lot of talk but let's see some action. If you can build a foil you can figure out a go pro...
Let's see some Clips of what works!
I just completed a project have not tried it yet...hope it works :cool2:

Thanks for the picts , now all can see you have indeed built a KBHF.

So now for your choice of words in your very first and edited post?

Sorry for being feisty just trying to get a response.
I learned everything about the build from this forum and it is greatly appreciated.
I guess I was being a little too sarcastic. I have seen some great looking builds and just hoping to see some in action.... sorry

Nice reply, and your excitment is fully understood!
I would venture to say there are quite a few guys who have designed and built KBHFs that will fly just fine, sorry but on my part don`t own either a go pro or vid camera so no action shots.
I will also say that I have tested D I Ys that were not strong enough and broke, myself and close friends included, and ones that were just not well thought out and poorly fabricated.
I downloaded your DIY KBHF photo to rotate it and zoom to have a better look.
I would make sure the your fuse between the T E of the F wing and the L E of the strut is strong, loads of stress there.
If you build another consider mounting the F wing under the fuse closer to the strut.
Your nose looks like it could use some cosmetic surgery.
If you can find a windsurf fin use it a a reference for all L E and T E sharpness, roundness.
Do you know someone who knows how to fly a KBHF so they can test yours?

A few photos
1st, way to much build time in early 2009 was not built well enough to fly, to much strut twist, and board to narrow.
2008 FOIL.JPG
My second build in 2010, very cara, air chair copy, wood strut core carbon wrapped, double wall alu fuse,1st gen wings 19 layers 300g F glass F, 4mm aircraft alu R
I am proud of that as it was the first flying where I live and MANY learned on it as well as still flying just slow and easy to this day.

3rd with prefab 1.1mm carbon plate built for high wind, low A R F wing. strut 13mm thick
R wing screws drilled thru to test TT fins, have since added inserts.

4th same carbon plate but cylindral fuse and higher A R quad aixis carbon wings, strut 1.1mm

I submit these for you in reply to your kind last post and to say that yes one can and have designed and built good flying KBHFs having invested a lot of time.
I would think that now if you asked any questions here you will get kind replys.
May I suggest use this to learn, front foot hook.

Great to see the history RH :thumb:

Although, I dont really understand saying the first one is too narrow ?
My board (and some of the Horue ones) is way smaller and narrow too - so in retroperspective, dont you think it was the twisting mast (and I assume new to it all back then) that was the main issue ?

Awesome to see your DIY hydrofoils during the years :D

Bajadrifty, I can understand your "interest" is to see those succeding with their DIY's thus you would like to see video when riding those ?

Well, let me say it this way, almost ALL of them works :naughty:

Some might find they need to strengthen or stiffen to get it to work reasonably well, and most of them are pretty slow of course, but around here there are lots of DIY foils, and they work, some are also quite fast.
Our 2014 Hydrofoil championships had two classes, a production and a DIY.

Most often, those having built themeselves, are moving to production foils because they have enjoyed making one or several foils themeselves, but when they have learned to ride and find out how GREAT a sensation it is to hydrofoil, they can see clearly what they want, and which road they want to take.
Thus going for a production foil which are typically both stiffer and faster and more well balanced.

But before getting to this point, many (who has the time) build one because of "all the exitement" to go foiling without too much cash involved - and they get hooked each and everyone, so they buy a production foil later.

A few of course (very few), does it because they LOVE building, and testing and trying different things, so they keep at it - also great :thumb:

Back to the topic - my point is that most of them works.

And riding out there, nobody cares if a DIY or a production, when having fun - so IMO all video of hydrofoils are great, no matter what type of foil and board, because we are not that many out there
