How far are you prepared to travel for wind?

my first rule is dont drive more than you kite. so if it's a 4 hour drive you better have wind all day. If I just need to walk down to my pond I don't mind if I only get wind for 15 minutes.

my second rule is if you never get skunked you are not even trying

The forceof wind doesn't matter to me, I like a light wind sesh as much as ones where trees are blown down. What matters to me is how long it blows.

I'm guilty for being a wind addict.

I purchased a new vehicle 17 months ago, and just turned 50,000km (31,000mi) on it.
My annual work commute is 2700km (1700mi) .

I would say 30,000+ km (20,000+ mi) have all been due to kiting. I spent all last summer driving from Toronto to Lake Erie 3 times a week which is about 3 hours round trip. The average time to our kite spots outside of Toronto is about an hour and a half one way.

I'll drive for anything above 14 knots.

Hey Shawn,

I think that it is a Canadian thing as I don't care how far it is if it means that their might be wind. My two local spots are 45minutes each way and all others are a minimum of 1.5hrs/way. Whatever seems to be going off is what we travel to....we try to car pool to decrease the expenses/carbon foot print. I honestly believe that the best fun is getting the tribe together and heading out on the trip! The anticipation as texts and phone calls go out to see who is coming to ride and who is staying home to wear the pretty dress (no actually dress wearing but good natured ribbing to the slaved that can't break free). Maybe its the gypsy in me that needs it or the gear junkie that just finds it satisfying loading everything into the back of the truck and taking off for who knows how long....

Yep, living in SWO I put on roughly 20000km a year on my truck kiting. Sad thing is that is all usually in 6 months as I don't do snow kiting.
At the same time my commute is almost 30000km a year....

I spend more money on my truck and gas then I do on my house... ugh... who brought this up anyhow?

beat this.... I walk to work and have put almost 55,000kms on my vehicle in 2014. My wife uses her own vehicle. I can't even claim to have put on 500km at all for work

I will travel anywhere and everywhere to kite if there is no wind in my local area.

My local spot is about 1 hour and 15 minutes from my house but I do have a cabin out there, so I can stay there if there is more than one day of wind (and I have the time off work).

For a good weekend I will drive 8 hours to the gulf of Mexico. Dauphin Island, Pensacola, Ft. Walton Beach or PC.

I sometimes work out of Elizabeth City NC which is pretty close to OBX, but it is a solid hour and a half before I get from the hotel to any of the good launches there.

So I guess what I am saying is Kiting = Driving... a lot of it. Yep, I should move to a beach somewhere.

Yeah. I like this rule. It applies to all activities. The activity needs to be at least = to or greater than the drive time.

Balls to that rule. A good session is worth the drive, especially if it's on the highway and not through traffic.
