Kiteboarding in the British Virgin Islands

Postby CarZin » Sun Jul 03, 2011 11:11 pm

I am going to the British Virgin Islands in December. I have read what a great place to kiteboard this is, but am surprised I can find no place to rent gear (other than a board). I will be landing in St Thomas, and taking a ferry over to Tortola, so if gear can be had in Thomas, then I can rent it there. I have contacted all the places I know of, and no one wants to rent. With airline costs the way they are, it will cost me a ton of bring my stuff.

I am renting a catamaran for the week with a Dingy, so I am actually looking forward to surfing in some areas that you normally can't, because the dingy can come rescue me if I have too many issues :)

Get a golf bag, take your own gear, problem solved.

normally renting is not that cheap! I rather bring my own gear, then I know what I have...you maybe save 100 bucks, but will have less fun since it is not your gear!

Check how much cargo costs, then ship it before you go...

If you want to kite your only option is to take your own gear. There are no kite schools or kite rental outlets on Tortola itself and when you get there you'll understand why. There is a kite school at BEYC, check them out on-line, but as far as I am aware they do not rent out kites.

As it sounds like you've never been to the BVI before I also urge you to read the BVI Kiteboarding Guide - a copy can be found here: http://www.windsurfing.vi/KiteboardingGuide.pdf

The BVI is an amazing place, but it's not an easy place to kite. This is essential, and I mean ESSENTIAL, reading.

The pdf listed here is a broken link. Anyone have a current copy? I head out next week and have no information on kiting there. I am planning to take a Rebel 9m/12m and a Flysurfer M Split. Thinking I will leave my North Nugget behind as I am concerned about luggage fees on Liat.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Heading out to the BVI in July, as I haven't been before I am trying to find the kitesurfing guide described above, however the link doesn't seem to be working? Could anyone provide me with a working link/guide please?

Also has anyone had issues taking their gear with Liat?
