Hydrofoil Jybes - whats the trick?

Postby andrepen » Wed Mar 18, 2015 4:26 am

Hello my friends,

I read here before that its very hard to jybe with the hydrofoil.

I mean, without touching the water.

In fact, what is hard is to switch the stance.

To turn from heelside to toeside and vice versa its not so hard.

That being said, whats the easyest way to switch the stance?

I always see on the videos people going from heelside to toeside, and then make the turn.

Is the other way (from toe to heel) harder?

Should I slow down to switch my feet?

I saw on the houre video, the guy put the board a bit down, and the up, and switch the stance when the board is going up. Front foot touch the board before the rear foot.

On the videos of the races, I see people doing it going very fast.

What are the tricks? Will I learn it some day?

Thanks a lot

The trick is to use a low Aspect Ratio Foil like the Original Carafino

A relevant video starting at about 4 minutes!
https://youtube.com/watch?v=ZPJtd7xQ5vo
I like to call what you are talking about Flying Stance Changes, FSC for short
Use the kite pull, sheet in, to off load your body weight from the board and change your feet quick trying to keep your body weight centered over the foils center of lift.
And it feels like that a slight impulsion to get the board flying up just before you change seems to help, and I know I am close when I miss and the board continues to fly all by it self!
Also as I see it there are 4 basic combinations of this move.
goofy heelside (flying stance change) to normal toe side 180° body spin clockwise from top
regular heelside (FSC) to goofy toeside 180° counter clockwise
goofy toeside FSC to normal heelside 180° clockwise
regular toeside FSC to goofy toeside 180° counter clockwise
By the way,
Replace FSC with " board on the water" and "flying" TURNS for 8 more possibilites.
Add in up wind, tacks to double the possibilites.
Add in kite up and down turns to double the turn combination possibilities.
And possible to do water starts in all 4 ways as well, add in kite loops forward and rear for even more combinations!
Other ideas?
As with most things seeing it in your head first and then practising and you will get it.
