I couldn't find much on this using the search function. Apologize if it has been covered.
I'm going down to OBX for a week in early/mid-May. From what I read, It seems like a good time for wind. I've never been before.
I'm looking for reasonably priced accommodations (but safe and clean) for just me, near to some good kite spots. I won't have a car. I plan to be dropped off from the connection, so proximity is important. Anything places that already have a kiting/windsurfing vibe, where I can meet some folks to kite with would be even better.
Also, if the wind is really up, I may be in the market for a smaller kite. So if it's close to a shop, that would be great too.
Thanks

If you can possibly swing it, get a car. I can't imagine Hatteras without a car. You are stuck with no ability to go where the wind direction is right. And the wind will not be SW all the time.

Is this the connection you're talking about?

For $360 round trip you can get a rental car for a week. I agree with Hugh, I'd want a car.
May is a good time to be in Hatteras.

They seem like a ripoff for the off season. Minimum $185 per night for this time of year is pretty steep if you are going for a whole week. Off season house rentals are super cheap. There are 3 bedroom houses available withing a mile or 2 or Real for under $100 per night early May.

As others have mentioned you need a car!car, car, car! Hatteras is full of great launches depending on wind direction. If there's no wind you'll need alcohol or drugs, you'll go out of your mind !

Someone else posted a thread about late April thru early May looking for someone to share a house they rented. If your dates are flexible do that.
If you have to stay alone try the Salvo Inn.
The money you will spend each way on airport transfers will almost cover the cost of a rental car for the week. Get the car and drive yourself!

Thanks for all the tips. The problem with the rental car is that this trip was originally planned by my buddies for surfing. We already have a suburban for the weekend.
My plan was to go down a little early and get some kiting in solo. They will pick me up for the weekend. So while I agree with all of you about relative cost making sense, I don't want to be on the hook for two cars.
Waterman's Retreat looks legit, but the best rate they could give was $287/night before a bunch of taxes and fees. So maybe this won't work out...
So currently thinking about just extending a surf trip I have in PR coming up to kite because I know I can get cheap/nice housing on the kite beach (punta las marias). I think the moral of the story is I need some friends who kite in addition to surf.

Don't know your exact dates, but these guys have some dates available mid-May.

Check out Kitty Hawk Kites @ Waves Village, similar to Real, but a better launch on site and they may be cheaper.
You can camp for dirt cheap too.
