Kite lines-do you do anything special to prolong life

Postby backcountry » Fri Jun 05, 2015 3:55 pm

I was reading the self launch posts the other day and in it someone mentioned coating his lines with sail coat, or something. What do/have people tried that extends the life of lines. My chicken loop line is getting pretty ratty and other than replace it, which I should do, what works there as well.

I buy Q-power lines, they last hundreds of sessions. I change them every 500 sessions or so, 4-5 years. Cut and redo the end loops once a year. Apart from that, rinse off the dust and dirt after the session and that's it.

Rub surf wax on your depower rope every 10 sessions or so to make it last forever

always walk toward the kite when wrapping lines to the bar ,pulling them standing still will erode the end of lines like a lime a little by little (sand)

I have had q-power for years and agree with alamos. They are the answer.

Don't do anything. Just use them. The pigtails wear out eventually and need to be replaced, but I've never had a line fail. I have 5-8 years of pretty heavy salt water use on my current set. They're faded, but still working fine.

Adding wax will attract grit, decreasing life. The Spectra is plenty slick on its own. Don't rinse the bar and lines unless you plan on fully flaking and drying the lines. Salt can decrease life a bit, but getting mildew will decrease life A LOT.

Sailkote works really well on the depower rope, last a lot longer and does not pick up dirt. the flying lines i just leave alone.

For my depower rope, I dip it in candle wax.
Lots of sand here, but not a problem.
Never replaced one, since I started this method.

Candles or paraffin work good, just don't use sticky surf wax.
Melt the wax in an old tuna can on the range.
Use a big piece of cardboard to prevent the mess.
Dip the rope and it will soak up the wax like a wick.

Check your chicken loop release, the new wax may gum it up.
