90Kg Rider - What conditions will need a 6M kite?

Hi All,

My smallest kite is 8m hadlow ID and I am tempted to buy a 6m kite because I have two trips booked (El Médano and Sri Lanka) and I want to make sure I can ride at these locations

But realistically what conditions will I need in order to use the 6m kite @ 90kg (dry body weight), I'm thinking ill need 30kts+ but pretty sure I've had the 8m up in 30/35kts.

So in short I'm wondering if the 6m is worth it.

Wouldn't bother...I say you can hold on with your 8 up to 35...maybe a bit more. Obviously the more towards the 40s the more it will be kind of extreme....but how many days are above 35????

It's not conditions in which u throw new tricks anyway..., those conditions for me are just for mega jumps and loops if you are into it. If you're not, you shouldn't be on the water in my opinion.

At your size, your probably not going to need a 6m unless you want to ride strapless comfortably in high winds.

If your riding a twin tip full time and a proficient rider, your unlikely to "need" anything smaller than your 8m until it's averaging over 35 knots.

I have no idea what you can expect for winds in those locations.

Get one. You wont use it much. But when you do...... Your will fucken sure know that you are alive!

I'm 82kg and can hold my 8m to 35 knot even 40 knot gusts. There are times one 25-35 not days that an 8m is the go. But at the same time theres times when a 6m is the answer. Usually 30-40+days.

I bought my 6m in 2012. Its my least used kite and in the best condition. But those fully powered days on the 6 make it worth every penny.

Days that you hate at the top end on the 8m that's just too gusty and punchy will be the days you relish on the 6.

As regards Sri Lanka don't waste your money. I'm your weight and I've been to Lanka 3 times I never needed anything smaller than an 8 meter with a twin tip. If it really is 40+ knots and you need to go smaller...just hire one.

I typically take an 8, 11 and a 14. If there is a full moon while you are there take a bigger kite or board too.

You'd probably be fine with an 8m as already said. It doesn't hurt to have a 6m in your quiver though and some use their baby kites in the winter on the frozen lakes. If you're rarely going to use it, I wouldn't buy one brand new unless you find a sale or deal. Since small kites like that may not get used all that often (depending on where one rides) you could likely find a used one in excellent condition.

Not needed for Sri Lanka but if you ride in really windy conditions and if you can afford it having a "correctly sized" kite rather than sheeting out a kite slightly too big, is more fun, and safer.

I would say 32-35 kts base wind and up you might prefer a 6m.

Really windy spots include Cape Town and (where I live) the North Atlantic / South Atlantic storms (roll on hurricane season!).

I'm thinking of taking 8, 10 13.5 for Lanka - riding a twin tip 137x42.

If the windwind is as it should be you will spend most of your mornings on the 10 meter and if it picks up the 8 meter in the afternoon. Like I said earlier if it's a full take your session saver.

Are you going to Negumbo, Kalpitiya, Adam's bridge or Arugan bay? Also, which mob are you staying with?
