Anyone care to chime in on locations (North America or otherwise) that benefit or lack wind during major el ninos? I'm feeling out some travel plans for the winter and imagine plenty of others would like some beta on spots.
A few things I've read - pacific trade winds drop off and Hawaii might be less good than typical. I saw that the water in the sea of Cortez is pretty warm and that might affect the La Ventana wind, also heard anecdotally of people being skunked there on el nino years.
As for my spot, I would say don't come to Southcentral Alaska looking for hot snowkiting this winter - pretty snowless so far and that comes on top of the last two years being poor snowpacks.
However, don't show up in the spring and summer without your gear - excellent combination of thermals and systems when it gets warm up here.

I say not so fast. The claim is not universally accepted. That businessinsider story is riddled with hints on how to invest accordingly, assuming it is in fact "the biggest". Before shorting this or going long that, might wanna read this one.
The other view of the claim...and why calling it the "strongest" may not be accurate:

Pretty interesting read.
Soon we will expect our obligatory "the science is settled" or "the train has left the station" bumper sticker slogan comment by our self-appointed authority.

NOAA can't make up their minds. Just 2 months ago they said the Atlantic basin was entering into a 25 year lull in hurricanes and tropical storms and this article now says the polar opposite.

It has been a very windy spring down here in NZ. Lots of warm sunny westerlies, just as predicted for El Niño. I remember 1998 being windier, but we should still have a couple more months of this.
Three hours out fully powered on a 7m C kite today
I just read the article, La Nina doesn't always follow a big El Niño. I doubt the author is a meteorologist.
