Alternatives to Brazil end October beginning of November

Postby kathrinchenh » Sat Apr 23, 2016 12:53 pm

Hey!

We are searching for a windy holiday destination around the dates 18. of October to 7. of November. We were in Brazil last year and it was awesome but this year we want to see something different especially because of the Zika Virus and the political situation in the country. It seems like Dilma will loose her position around this years autumn.

We know that Brazil is one of the best destinations for kitesurfing in the world and that it is almost impossible to find something comparable but maybe you know some insider tipp :thumb: It would be great if there is a high wind probability and it would be also nice if there are other things to do as well, in case there is no wind :D

We thought we could give one of the following a try:
  • Sicily
  • Namibia
  • South Africa
What would you recommend? Are these good options? Which would be the "best" option? Do you have other recommendations?

Thanks a lot and nice greetings from Austria
Kathrinchen

Think La Ventana, Mexico is good that time of year.

Cuba, Cabo Verde, that's about it... November is tough.

October/November is a little early for La Ventana. Still a slight chance for hurricanes and the North winds haven't really established themselves yet. Not a sure thing that time of year, although you could get lucky and have good uncrowded conditions.

I also think too early for Capetown.

October November is not easy.

That is too early for Cape Town, take that off the list. Cape Town really starts in mid Dec.

Vietnam - Mui Ne starts around then, good mix of party/kite and super cheap.

Luderitz, Namibia is where they set the world speed records for wind/water and that is prime season there. Be prepared for a nature/athletic holiday as there is nothing else there. Make sure you pack small kites/small boards and you know how to manage being overpowered. Think 45+ knot days on a reg basis. Good conditions, just go prepared for serious wind power.

Brazil you already know.

Otherwise, that is a tough time as its a transition time like April.

NZ cranks that time of year. The tail end winter storms mixed with Spring westerlies. You are guaranteed wind most days. The swell is usually pumping this time of year. So if you are interested in wave you will definitely get some. You can kite 360 degree wind angle and even if the beach your at isn't on it wont be too far to drive to get to another. Hell at widest part of the North Island its a 5 hour drive from the east to west coast!... Its 20 minutes at the closest.....

But October is still full wet suit temps. Its warm yet. So if you are looking for 30 degrees and boardshorts. That wont be happening in October.

Thank you for all your tips and information :thumb:

NZ sounds great but I think this is a little bit too far from Austria. 1000 EUR for a flight (roundtrip including kite equipment) is the absolute maximum and I think NZ is also not cheap. But I'll go there someday for sure. I think it is awesome there :)

Namibia sounds also interesting, especially if you do some trip through the wild life there. But 45+ knts seems to be a little bit too hardcore :D is the wind more moderate in Walvis Bay? Or is the season not started in Walvis Bay at this time?

I also heard about Cuba, Mexico and Cabo Verde but I'm not quite sure if there is windy season at this time. Peru sounds nice but we are not looking for waves

I think Mui Ne can be a great spot too but I also thought that the windy season there is in February? Am I wrong?

To summarize, if we want flat to choppy water, consistent wind and no wet suite there is no real alternative to Brazil  I mean, we could also go with wet suite, this wouldn't be the biggest problem, but big waves are not what we are looking for. Big waves frighten us

I also think it is hard to find something better than Brazil. I'm also searching for a good alternative but I'm also still not convinced. Maybe Mozambique is an alternative but I didn't find enough information to Mozambique.
