Whose boosting on a hydrofoil?

Postby plummet » Mon Nov 21, 2016 9:04 pm

There's a lot of talk about dudes riding little kites and doing strapless carving on hydrofoils.

But what about the dudes boosting big?
What size kites do you use for what wind ranges?
What is the perfect hf boosting winds/kite sizes?

Ask foilonfoil, who is posting 40+' boosts on Facebook on the regular. He is all about the Sonic. I don't have the WOO so I have to judge my height in relation to the trees on the shoreline or the channel marker piles.

My take is that you go way bigger on a foil kite, like a 15m up to 18 mph, pretty sketchy after that. The beauty is you can take your 18 out in like 11 mph wind and still do a solid 20' boost.

Keep in mind that it's much more of a vertical boost with a dangling descent than a powered up megaloop twin tip landing, at least that's how I jump.

my record is 33.4 ft using a 10m flite with the wind gusting to 23. i find being over powered doesn't help at all. its all about getting up to max speed comfortably so you can still shoot up your kite without losing control. in the mid teens i can hit mid twenties easy with the 10 or 12. 10 and below i max in the mid to high teens with a 14.5 flite. i dont like to boost with freestyle kites because i like the longer hang time and soft landings of high ar kites so i dont come down that hard on the foil. my kite movement is also a little different on the foil as i like to keep the kite pinned in one spot and as i swing down to it i then do a hard redirect to stop my momentum completely around 4 ft above the water. if i want it to be perfect so my board doesnt touch down i will redirect it slightly sooner so i land with some speed and getting the foil in nose first but most of the time i dont care and just plop down onto the board

i've got a 10m speed4 lotus and get some big air on that in 15-20 kts.....over 20 kts its diff to hold it don for boosting high.....

i just bought a speed4 dlx 8m and am really stoked about the prospects of boosting in 25kts with that kite on the foil. i think its gonna be awesome.

I say 11m foil is the perfect boosting kite. It has tons of vertical lift and plenty of hangtime. That was my experience anyway on a sonic 2 demo. It was fast so you can redirect it and load the lines without screwing.up timing as much.

I personally use a 15m sonic 1 to boost in 15kn. Plenty of power and amazing hangtime. I have a 9m sonic 1 but it really needs to be moved around so you dont plummet straight down.

Ive been to that area where that photo was taken and flat water with wind gradients is definitely awesome.

TLDR 11m foil, 18kn, flat water, go fast
PS check lines often since loading for a jump puts a heck of a lot more stress on the lines than powering upwind.

9 sonic in 25 knots is quite special. I'd say it's pretty easy to get 10m. I haven't put a woo on my HF board yet, but I found a mount at the weekend so will try it soon.

I have just gotten back into jumping with my foil. So far my highest Woo reading has been 12.9m. I did that on a 9m ChronoV2 UL and 20m lines. I was reasonably powered at around 18-20 knots. I think I will go much higher in about 25 knots on 15m lines.

In the picture I am on my 13m ChronoV2 UL with 20m lines in about 15 knots.

Pretty sure if you want to go as big as possible, the smallest kite with max power that you can hold down and still go at least 25knots on take off will let you go as high as possible.

In my limited experience I can jump higher on my Chrono Foil kites than I can on the same size EdgeV8.

Know it is hard to compare but would you describe what might the difference?

I jump only with inflatables and cannot compare at all but on other hand cannot complain either.
So far the highest 13,1m on Velocity 7m and Moses HF Silente HP560

Sweet that's some height!

What wind speed BraCuru for your 13.1m jump on the 7m ?.
