Land with loop vs downloop??

Postby Skyhigh100 » Tue Jan 03, 2017 4:37 am

Need some help with how to land a big air. Under 25 feet is not a problem as I just pulled my front hand And the kite typically catches me and I can ride out. However when going above 25 especially above 30ft I pull the front hand nothing happens and crash real hard. So I think I need to start looping my kite or downlooping it.

I've been researching for a while and understand downloops are pulling with the front hand versus loops are pulling with the back hand. however when down looping will I be doing transitions? I use down loops every session for toe to heel transitions

What is the best way to loop the kite for a soft landing when boosting above 30 feet? Downloop or loop? At what height should you start the loop or downloop?

Thanks!

Search the forum for landing loops/hellilloops. Basically you send the kite going down instead of going up. Good luck.

Where is your kite when you do big airs?
Too far behind the zenith?
Think about correcting your technique...don't send the kite too far behind the zenith, this way you will have it above you and when you want to move it forward the normal pull on the front hand will be enough.

But in general remember this:

When doing big air the kite can be in 3 positions:

- zenith. This is ideal and fornkanding you pull your front hand gentle to land as always

- in front of the zenith. You pulled too early forward and the kite moves forward and you are about to land very fast and hard. To get control for a softer landing you have to pull hard on you backhand, this way the kite loops back over the zenith bringing the kite back over you for a soft landing.

- behind the zenith. Now pull hard on your front hand to loop the kite above you. Instead of falling down with no power after your jump thenkite now has power and gets back over you for a smooth landing.

In both situation the kite loops ABOVE you and is nothing like a normal kiteloop or Megaloop.

After a certain height the kite always tends to betoo far behind you and your kind of obligated to loop the kite. For me it doesn't matter to which side I loop the kite to the front or the back doesn't really matter. Just try and you will see, start pulling one hand a bit earlier than you normally would and pull hard and keep on pulling.

++ what Toby said assuming at apex of jump you don't have much forward momentum
Also on 9m I find that a well timed redirect forward works as well as a heliloop. Just put kite slightly behind zenith prior to redirecting it forward for landing.

FD: Depends on type of kite, I find that on one of my kite the position of the kite doesn't matter as much (still needs to be close to zenith) but on another kite I have to do exactly what Toby described else kite goes too deep.

One case where looping back when kite is behind zenith is if you pop a bit late and still have a lot of momentum forward then it's best to keep the kite back and loop it back, that way it loops to the side of window and redirect forward momentum downwind.

On the other hand if you have still some forward momentum and loop front from the kite already passed zenith you will mostly like crash hard... Never tried though but doesn't seem natural to me.

Thanks for the responses!

Toby you are correct the kite is way behind me on the big boosts.

When I do a front hand pull down loop after the apex of my jump, will I be landing a transition every time or can you land going in the same direction?

90% of time I would be landing those as a transition.
Don't worry too much about it, you are pretty much landing straight downwind. If the kite is back at 12 as you land then you have the choice of going as a transition or not. If it is done only 3/4 of the way then it's heading toward transition direction as you land so it is more natural to go that way but you can just keep pulling front hand and head forward...

For those I usually keep kite far back so my body start to swing/pendelum toward transition direction quite a lot as I throw downloop so it's natural for me to do those as transtion 90% of time. Occasionaly if my body is not facing right direction or I loop it very early I would head the other way...

If the kite loops more above you, and you keep pulling, you will go to the same direction.

If you loop with a kite more in front of you, you will do a transition. But if you keep looping, you can also go in the same direction.
