What fin set up are people using on directional?

Postby Onthewater860 » Wed Jan 04, 2017 4:24 pm

I just bought my first directional, a used slingshot angry swallow that came with a 4 fin set up. But the board can be set up 5, 4, 3 fin.
What does everyone prefer? Pro's/ cons?

It certainly seems to be voodoo...
There is little to no information as to what combinations of setup/size/stiffness do what when searching online, which I find surprising.

The FCS site has a info on this, not sure if this helps but is what I used to order a set of fins for mine.

I always use thruster setup.

Dont like quads - feels like a TT or raceboard to me, tracks too much eventhough often better upwind - and the "surf" feel when you turn on the wave is lost (at least not as good...), even with smaller fins, in my experience.

But many like quads because it feels more skatey and TT like and better upwind

If you dont know, you wont feel the difference for a long time, so just choose what it got now then, easiest :naughty:
And try it yourself when you CAN feel every small difference, later :D
But beware, fin sizing and profile and stifness and topflex is just as, or even more, important !

If your using your surfboard as your light wind board, a quad is generally great for the modern flat wide fish or pill type grovellers.

If your on a small surfboard.... thruster.

Once I started foiling, I'll only use a thruster going forward. Will only be on a surfboard when its pretty good conditions and nothing feels as nice as a thruster on a small board when your not wanting for power.

Hi "onthewater"
Did your board come with two larger, and smaller fins ? try this, large fins in the front boxes, small fins in rear boxes = loose feel to turns, good easy carving, upwind ok.
now try small fins at front, large fins at rear, stiffer feel to initiate turns, probably wider arc carving, upwind good to excellent.
note-- when riding quad set-up try to get your back foot above the four fins, not too far forward.

Thruster will be the best "allround" set up.

Quads give good hold on very steep wave faces, and when the board is cranked right over, but maybe it's more fun to have the board "break out" slide sometimes ?

Good time to experiment !!

I'm also lost on which configuration let alone which futures fins to try on my Vader. There's so much choice yet little information. I've just decided I'm going to have to trial and error many settings and fins even though it's an expensive way to find out.
