Another Fatality in Le Morne / Mauritius - sign petition

Postby Onda » Fri Aug 04, 2017 12:58 pm

Really horrible!
I´ve been there this June and can fully understand / support this.

Citation from the petition page (link below):
"In 2017 alone, 29 people drowned in Mauritius.
Ten days ago a lady died on the beach at Le Morne which has a very strong current.
There is no rescue station there.
Ionclub is not allowed to use jetski to save people, just boats, which makes this job impossible on big-wave days.
The petition is for the Mauritius government to put a Coast Guard post on Le Morne beach with jetskis or give permission for Ionclub to use jetskis as it is used by the coast guard around the world on dangerous beaches that receive tourists.
Please sign and help stop the senseless death of tourists.
In the link below contains a video filmed with a drone, it is the last moments of this lady's life, 29th victim of the lack of security on the beach of Le Morne:

Kind regards,

And WHAT is the logic behind that thinking ?
Basically , if it weren't for modern-day technology, (helicopters) and medicine , i'd
be dead right now ; so i'm for anything that can save the life of a human,
(even the stupid ones like me) ! :thumb:

While your quote of 29 people drowning in Mauritius since the beginning of 2017 is correct, 27 or 28 of them were not watersports related.
Most of the victims were people who could not swim and drowned only a few meters from the beach, in some cases after having a few drinks.

The ban of jet-skis is to protect the lagoon.
And in my opinion, if jet-skis were allowed, there probably would be more fatalities because of their reckless use.

I've seen a parasailing boat (with people up in the parachute) cut through the kiteboarding spot at Le Morne on a relatively busy day. Not sure kiteboarding is a high priority for the Mauritian government.

But a rescue jetski wouldn't be used for fun right?

Is a jetski worse than a boat?

Like in most African countries you're only allowed to make exceptions for politicians and their friends, everyone else is equal.
If they allow one or two jetskis for rescue, people will say that it is unfair, and why shouldn't everyone be allowed to have one.

Also, I am not sure how many fatalities could have been avoided if there were jetskis on standby. I don't recall any case of people helplessly witnessing someone drown at Le Morne.
It is not a case of rescue jetskis like we see on YouTube when the pros are surfing Jaws and there's one or two people to watch over in case they fall and get eaten by the wave.

The problem with a jetski is that it sucks the water and runs it through a compressor, which essentially kills everything that was there. And the concentrated blast of water can't be good for the coral either. (Yet for some reason you're allowed to have a jetski-type engine on your speedboat, but that's getting off topic.)

education is no1

on a sidenote - jetskis are way more efficient that other water craft and as result are less polluting to the water

skis work well - you need to have the cash for training too as a clueless person on a ski (even an experienced surf lifesaver) can mkae thisgs go pear shaped quickly. Hawaiian Water Patrol do training out of Haleiwa, Oahu, Hawaii - they look pretty sharp!
