As equipment evolves, I wonder what you are using these days for kitesurfing in waves. Wave kites vs. all arounders? Smaller kites/bigger boards vs bigger kites/smaller boards. Tomo style shapes vs traditional high performance short boards. Strapless vs strapped. Etc, etc.
I will start:
Location: NorCal Coast
Weight: 220
Kites: 9m/7m Wave kites. I have a 12m but anytime I try to wave kite with it, it feels very cumbersome and I almost always fall back to kite underpowered with 9m and big board - often walking back if cannot stay consistently upwind. Our prevailing conditions are cross-on so you don't have a luxury of parking a kite.
Boards:
Small/medium waves - a high performance short board shape. 5'11 squash tail. Tried FireWire Tomo boards - pretty fun - but did not feel that they are a significant improvement from "traditional" short boards and did not like the kite FST construction - stiff and bouncy.
Bigger waves - a pretty typical step up shape. 6'1 with round pin tail.
Both boards are customs with PU core and heavy glassing schedule to survive kiting. 5'11 is polyester resin. 6'1 is epoxy resin.
"Fall back" board for light winds - 6'5 short board, almost 40l. Regular surfboard glassing. Bought it used for around $100.
Would love to hear what other people are using in different locations around the globe.
