Seat harness for Hydrofoiling. Which are you using and why?

Postby NEkitesurfing » Sat Nov 04, 2017 11:29 am

In the racing scene it looks like only a few models are used by almost everybody. What are pros and cons of each model? Will there be dedicated hydrofoil and new developed seat harnesses for 2018?

I like a seat harness for boosting but the race ones seem so delicate....I use a Dakine Vega...has a bit more structure to it. I hacked a NP halo bar onto it because I hate chicken loops and accidental unhooks.

I am using a Neil Pryde RS Wind. Its a Windsurfing harness with zero padding, very light and a real seat harness (sits very low on your bum and thus helps to "suspend" during tacks and jibes).

I was using Mystic seat for 15 years, then went to a waist as I was on surfboard nearly 100%. Then I was learning to foil and messed up my back, went to Dakine Fusion seat, and it is indeed easier on foil with seat and somewhat easier on my back. But after 15 sessions or so I tried waist again and I've found it better overall due to increased mobility of hips and legs

I also was always torn between pluses and minuses of seat vs. waist. But when in doubt, why not to try a crossbreed? So I'm on Dakine chameleon this year, but wonder what more proficient riders think of it.

I had one but got frustrated with the seat part separating from the waist part. Again boosting a lot so the upper pull was too much for the velcro.

That's my choice too since 2014. Super light and strong. Is anything more lighter than it on the market?

Dakine Nitrous Shorts with butt straps modded to keep bar lower than stock. Not my preferred spreader bar location, but old back injuries and surgery leave me no choice. Kiting this way for 11 years. Tried a Fusion seat harness but it’s way too stiff without any reduction in back stress

For me stress on the low back is completely dependent on bar height (lower bar transferring more of the load directly to my legs) and almost nothing to do with all that stiff padding around the back.

They look kooky over a full wet suit, but it’s what works so that’s what I use

Whichever one fits you best. I've had mystic force shield and dakine fusion and both worked for me.

I tried the nitrous shorts and wasn't a fan. You wear them instead of boardshortz, but t hen after your session you have to keep you harness on. Also, the hook seemed too low for me. On gusty boosting days, I felt like it was hurting my back. It would yank my hips out from under my lower back. All depends on what works for you.

Cheap Dakine seat (hand me down actually) with a dynabar stainless steel spreader bar. Gives plenty of support for boosting and lets me foil toeside easily. Also works on SB nicely too.
