Don’t waste your time with North, F-One, LF, Best or Cabrinha. XR5 or Free from Core or Ozone’s Catalyst. They are pretty much the only two respectable brands left. Everyone else just wants to sell you stuff you don’t need. Or, see if you can try out the PS from new brand Eleveight. Reasonably priced and thus far has only had great reviews..

Hi!

As a beginner you will progress fast, so depending on your stage, I would say that while taking classes don't make any purchases, first use rented equipment, if you break it, you won't have to pay for it. After you finish the course and can navigate by yourself, keep renting and trying different types of kites, talk to local kitesurfers to get insight on wind speed and recommendations.

When you learn to avoid crashing your kite, you can make your first purchase, as you will have enough knowledge on what is the best kite for you.

As a general rule, the best types for a beginner are delta and bow kites. But I would learn renting them and then buying a kite with which I could progress faster, so I might be buying a hybrid one.

Also consider buying a good used kite first, as you don't wan't to break a new kite after a few sessions.

Best!

PD:
I just wrote a simple guide on choosing the right kitesurfing equipment. I would really appreciate your feedback on it. Thanks!

It's a catch-22. As a learner you will punish and probably damage your new bright and shinny kite. So why not buy used? Don't. You need every advantage possible which means a durable new kite with no issues. Instead buy a new kite from last year at a steep discount.Good deals can be found on Rallys for some reason, it's a solid and decent kite that will not hold you back. After a year or two go buy your dream kite but don't go too crazy with your first kite, you will be hard on it. Just get something that is solid and proven and most importantly get a good deal and concentrate on learning the craft.

Hey Chicken, have you tried the Free? I'd think it'd have less wind range than XR5...but looks like a nice simple wing.

I have (13.5m). Great beginner option, nice fat 3-strut wing and very stable. Yes less wind range but you never lose touch with the kite at any point. The only problem the Free has is that between the XR5 and the Section2 (faster turning dedicated wave kite) it’s hard to see it filling any niche apart from that specific beginner/progression segment. And even there, I would say the XR is so versatile that you could easily go with that as your beginner kite. I haven’t tried the light wind versions but I imagine it must be a comfortable cruise.
