Tyler, Texas nearest Kitesurfing fix?

Postby Stylo321 » Thu Jan 20, 2011 1:54 pm

Hi

I have been invited to visit a friend in Tyler, near Dalllas, Texas.
My question is :- are there any inland lakes close by that are regularly kitesurfed? (is it worth taking my quiver)
If not, how far / where is the next best place to kite?

Failing that are there any other watersports/things to do in the vicinity?

Wow, all the way from the UK to Tyler, Tx. I have extended family there. Although, I have never kited in that area, I have drooled over Lake Ray Hubbard which is not too far. Very large lake with what seems like (from the bridge/highway) quite a number of good launches. Check it out on Google Earth.

Good luck y'all....and don't pick up the accent. UK accent mixed with a "deep" Texas country accent should sound pretty interesting.

I live and kite in the Dallas area. There are probably between 50 and 75 active kiters in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We ride Ray Hubbard at several spots, Dalrock is probably most popular on a SE wind day. SE is our most likely wind direction in the summer. We also ride Lake Grapevine on a NE day and Lake Lewisville on a NE day. Lake Ray Roberts is also a great south wind spot. Lake Benbrook is good for N or S and that is located south of Fort Worth. That was the long answer, the short answer is yes bring your gear. Message me if you want any details.

20 m is right on. I wanted to add one more thing about it.
Our season starts in march unless you want to bring a dry suit.
The water temp this year is very low so march thru April you need at least
A 3-2 suit also. If you are coming before that I wouldn't bring anything
It's just not that reliable before march.
There is a new cable park in fort worth which is about 2 hour drive from
Tyler.
March thru July 3-6 days a week windy. Size from 7 m to 15 m
Most popular size is 12 or 11 m

Thanks very much for the answers.

I will bring my kit for sure. I guess its pretty much flat water as they're lakes?? (it'll be heaven after the choppy stuff we have here!)

Dallrock, Water temp is cold here a 3-2 is my summer suit!!
It is now looking like it will probably be in September.
Do you have windy seasons? if so how is September?

I guess Ray Hubbard is about an hours drive from Tyler, does anyone kite Lake tyler?
or the lakes nearer Tyler itself as I'll have to split time between kiting and family time.

The lake next to Tyler looks promising. Looks to be about 2 miles across in the narrow direction. Could be good enough. Let us know what you find.

I have never talked to anyone that rides lake Tyler. I looked at it on Google Earth. It appears that most of the lake front property is privately owned and there are docks all over. Even the park that looked promising has 20 docks in it.

As for our season, March to May is best. June is ok, July and August are the dog days, very hot with little wind. Sept we start to see fall wind then October and nov we get wind again,. The fall riding is great cuz the water is so warm.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Thanks for the help GB, 20m and Dallrock.

When I decide on a time for the trip, would any of you guys mind me contacting you to arrange a kite session. Trying to avoid kiting alone!

I've been kiting 6years, so hopefully good enough not to disturb your riding or cause any mayhem on your waters, but definitely not good enough to show anyone up! :)

one other thing are there any critters in the water I should be wary of?

I think it would b fine for you to contact any of us. There is plenty of room and pretty small egos on the DFW riders. The only critters to worry about is some of us riders, but most don't bite too hard!
