North Neo 2012 - feedback needed (mainly for waves)

Postby cabron » Fri Feb 03, 2012 8:58 am

So I have read Oase.com's view on North Neo 2012 and that got my interest.

Has anyone tried it yet, and especially in onshore waves, how does it handle?

Thanks!

Have used the 9 a few times. similar to last year but slightly more rock solid, if thats possible. Direct steering and perfect float as well as super stable.
this is the kite I use for teaching and for onshore/cross on waveriding.
not sure if quite in shops yet but should be everywhere in a couple of weeks.
Get a demo or just buy if no chance to try, you will be blown away how solid a frame it is in the sky :thumb:

Hi

I only ride waves in a strong and gusty wave spot (Guincho, Portugal).
I'm still riding 2009 Evos, 7m is the kite i use 90% of the time.
I still love this kite for side onshore wave riding (much better than some actual kites I've flown).
But it's getting old, and needs replacement.
I'm considering the Neo 7m because of the steering depowered and also it's lightness but I'm
afraid of loosing the massive low end of my Evo.
The dilemma is Evo or Neo.

I will also replace my evo 9m 2009 that I don't like that much (grunty, slow and heavy) but has a massive low end, it's my biggest kite at 80kg.
Will the Neo 9m do the job in 15kn on a surfboard?
I don't like riding kites bigger than 9m :(

Feedback appreciated.

Thanks
Vasco

Btw
I also have a Evo 6m that I will keep for my kid and for super strong days in Guincho.
I ride on 20m lines.

last year bought neo 10 m in june, used three months then in sept tried 8 rebel yust after one hour with my neo .
nearly same power but double speed lightness and fun for rebel.
Okay I have been fouled from rumors this time, deflated neo and left gently to the shop for selling
to beginners(what is meant for),heavy grunty slow,a truck.
try before buying.

hi
I've been on Rebels but Evos made me a much better surfer.
Rebels are hi performance kites, but that's not the point.
In side onshore with strong gust peaks Rebels do not make your life easier, they require to much
attention, i want focus on the wave not the kite.
I'm not going back to Rebels again that's for sure.
My next kite will be Evo or Neo.

My girlfriend bought a 12m Neo (2011) and I used it some days in Barbados in waves:

+ very stable
+ good wind range, lot of power
+ steering possible even when depowered.

- far too slow in the waves! Have impression of 2 seconds delay on steering movements. My old 11m 2007 JN Prima Donna 2 or a 12m Naish Bolt that I could try are much much faster.
- Kite keeps pulling and doesn't move far enough to the edge of the window.

Conclusion: Good Kite for beginners, but not suited for waves.

In 12 years riding I've never seen a kite bigger than 9m good for riding waves.
Please stay on topic.
Neo 2012.

BTW actual KSP world champion is riding Neos.
He won one eye riding them.
I've tested a lot of kite brands, but i always end riding North kites.

I was not there, but from what I hear Airton won One Eye on a Rebel. That said, he often rides Neos with great success also. I have not ridden the new Neo, but based on a small amount of feedback, lighter riders in steadier winds of all levels (including world champion riders) have been riding Neos as a high-performance wave kite. Though they work well for beginners they are also high-performance freeride/wave kites that will work for any level rider.

I'm a heavier rider, and all the other three-strut kites I've ridden in the past tend to deform and lose performance when I load them up, especially in high winds. From what I'm hearing, heavier riders who load up the kite or who like to throw their kite around a lot in the waves may prefer a kite like the Rebel. The Evo also works great in the waves for heavier riders, but in my opinion they are more suited to people who want a stable kite to sit in one spot as they surf, as opposed to the more nimble Rebel, which also requires a little more attention be paid to it.

So the long and short of it is that the Neo, Evo, and Rebel are all high-performance wave kites each suited to a different type of rider, and really the best way to figure out which is best for you is to try them out. If that is not possible, hopefully this helps a little bit.

Hi Dan
Thanks for the reply.
As I said I'm riding EVO's 09 for the last 3 years, I love them (7m and 6m).
I will upgrade because they are gettting old, the only things I'll add to my evos is steering when depowered, and drift in big sizes (my 9m is a heavy kite).
That's why I'm considering NEO's, but I ride in a strong and gusty spot
Dilema is EVO or NEO.
REBEL is out of question.
BTW 180pounds on 20m lines 5'11 surfboard.

Best waves.

vasco,

I had 2010 and 2011 Evo's. I loved them , think i preferred the '10's with individual strut pump. Turned well and lot's of low end. I'm 85kg ride 5'11 surfboard x onshore, and sometimes turning onto an onshore wave/getting a floater straight downwind the weight can make it start to fall.

I was going to get the 2012 Evo's but tried a Bandit 5, which is light, turns quick, loads of low and high end and for me work better. I would have tried the 3 strut Neo if it had been out, but personally I think the '12 Evo's would be good, i have a feeling the lighter weight Neo would be better, if you want to stick with North, But if you can try and look at the B5, it will do everything you want.

Hope that's of some use.

mike
