Foil in Mauritius / Rodrigues

Postby mehdiben » Sun Oct 02, 2016 11:36 pm

Hi,

I'm heading to Mauritius (Palmar, near Bellemare) in October and I wanted to get info on whether the lagoon is deep enough there to foil at any tide level. Has anyone been there or know what are the best spots to foil there?

For Rodrigues, I have been told the lagoon in front of the Mourouk hotel is too shallow to foil except at high tide on spring tides, has anyone been there and tried to foil?

Thanks for your help!!

I can't help for Rodrigues, but Palmar is not suited for foiling.

The Palmar lagoon is relatively shallow, and can actually have only a few cm of water in some places during big tides.
You could probably foil at high tide, with tides greater than 50cm on the attached chart, but I don't guarantee.

Best place nearby for foiling would be Trou d'Eau Douce, 10km further South. There you will have access to a much deeper lagoon, and the biggest lagoon of the island, stretching nearly 30km to Pointe d'Esny.

Thanks Lokihel!
In case I still take my foil, although unlikely now, where in Trou d'eau douce would be a good launching spot?
Cheers
Mehdi

You have a choice of two public access area with enough space to launch, which I have circled in green.
In red are the shallow parts you should avoid.
The yellow arrows show the most common wind direction.

The one further into the bay might be tricky because of the boats, dry parts (in red), and gusty wind, depending on the direction.
The out just out the bay is better in my opinion.

If you're sufficiently good not to get yourself into too much trouble, go South to the sandy area.

Also attached is the 30km course you could do if you are very brave. Might be tricky to avoid some shallow areas that sneak up on you when you least expect it.
