Just back yesterday from La Ventana, Mexico. United agent asked me what was actually in my "golf" bag and I replied (like a fool) honestly and replied: "a kite board".
$200 USD charge for one-way flight to Houston! Golf clubs would of been $35.

Some airlines (Delta) ease up if you are are carrying a "wakeboard".
They ding you $150 Us for a Kiteboard. If you have smaller TT try claiming it as a wakeboard.
I print out a copy of the restrictions as the agents are not always aware of all the details.
If not throw in a few golf clubs.

Kiteboards

150 USD/CAD for travel to all regions (excluding Europe and North Africa)
150 USD, 175 CAD*, or 125 EUR* for travel to/from Europe or North Africa
Boards over 115 linear inches will not be accepted
Kiteboards will not be accepted as part of the passenger's baggage allowance
All kiteboard equipment is accepted up to 70 pounds at a flat rate
Kiteboards are allowed up to two (2) boards per bag
Kiteboards are not accepted on flights operated by Express Jet
*CAD amount will be charged exit Canada, and EUR amount will be charged exit Europe.

Kneeboards/Wakeboards

Standard baggage policies apply, subject to size and weight restrictions and fees
Must be packaged in an appropriate kneeboard/wakeboard bag/case

$200 a pop, why aren't split boards more popular?

If in the US or Baja always fly Alaska if possible. By far the most kiter friendly airline & generally friendly-er overall. No need to lie about whats in the bag. I guess Virgin Airlines is very similar

Virgin America was bought by Alaska. Jet blue is also good. surfboards/kiteboards cost the same as check In baggage

American is friendly to Golfers, not Kiters.
So make sure you are a Golfer ;-)
