Duotone Evo 2019 vs Evo 2018

Postby flipper231 » Fri Dec 14, 2018 5:40 pm

Hi I read somewhere that th 2019 Evo was modified in the large and small sizes and that the medium sizes remained pretty much the same.

I would like to take advantage of the close-outs for my large kite (14 or 13m) which sees a lot of airtime.

Is the 2019 14m a Ferrari and the 2018 a dog?

What is the story, comparisons are hard to get....

Cheers!

Lol... in my neck of the woods, a 14 is often a Ferrari compared to not riding at all....

Someone tested it side by side with the Rebel en can share his experience?
I am on the 2018 Rebel now but I am in doubt whether I will change to the evo next year...

I have a 2014 Rebel 14 meter that will be replaced in the next few months. It does well on flat water but it’s not that great in the surf, I’m wondering is I should get a 14 meter EVO to replace, would it be a bit faster turning? ( I realize 14 meter= slower turning) love the rebel for jumping. Not looking for a dedicated surf kite, freeride all the way😁

I have spent a bit of time on the 2018 14m Evo. I think it turns quite fast for a 14m. Dunno about the 2019m but I cant imagine it being much different.

The fastest kite I have ever flown in that size is the Ocean Rodeo 14.5m. The kiteloops were too pivotal for me though and I had to do them with the bar pulled half in which messed with my muscle memory...

I have a 2018 15m Rebel and 12/10m Evos. It depends on your intended goal, riding style, and local conditions. 2018 vs 2019 Evo - I didn't notice any difference.

Evo:
1. Quicker, less powerful looping
2. Almost as good hangtime
3. Same or better height on jumping, depending on skill level
4. Much better slack and drift
5. Automatic relaunch

For me, Evo was needed for my riding style and normal water conditions for load/popping down the line between waves. It's the "all-rounder" and can do everything well, but not as good as kites designed for specific purposes. Choose this kite if you want to do other things other than just jumping and old school tricks. I progressed a huge amount on this kite and wish I had something similar a long time ago. Also, assuming you're heavier for the 14m replacement, you'll need to pump it to 8 PSI to stop it from deforming in higher winds or high load situations (i.e. reefing the shit out of it to loop faster so you don't land on your face).

Rebel:
1. Old school board-off hangtime monster
2. Low end power
3. Automatic jumping

People probably use Rebels for general freeride do-everything, but that's not what it does. It does two things extremely well - mowing the lawn in crap conditions and jumping. It takes no skill whatsoever to jump big. You literally edge against the kite as in normal mowing, pull the bar and release the board. If you can already loop without thinking and just want to do old-school airstyle tricks, this is your kite. ......or if you're really fat.

Rode the 2018 evo, we all hated it coming of the 2016/2017s. Rode the 2017s against the 2019... much improved over 2018. Similar feel to the 2017 but mich quicker being 3 strut.

It now feels like a north ... sorry duotone kite again.
