I like the idea of a watch instead of a phone. I'm looking at the forerunner 35.

Anybody got any feedback on these?

i use the sessions app on my apple watch. i get session maps, speed, distance, jumps, jump height, jump locations on map, calories burned and my kite sessions count in my health app for workouts and i get a discount on health insurance at work. :D
the app also works for windsurfing :-? and surfing 8) ... I've used it for surfing and its cool. captures all my waves and guess what - i catch less waves than I think I do!
and it's free. :jump: has a few bugs with sessions sync, but they always end up syncing in the end so thats cool. the realtime data on the watch is nice with jumps speed etc. :thumb:

Apple watch sort of does the trick.. I used mapmyrun app to record one of my long foil crosswinders. Not sure if you can get speed in realtime easy.. most apps would lock up to default screen, for some reason.
But it did not last more than a month for me. It cracked screen after falling down from less then 2feet of height. I took it off the wrist and put on rear bumper of my SUV, while changing.. Wind blew it off the bumper, it hit the pavement and now it's unusable mess... Like with iPhones the screen is intentionally designed to be super fragile.. Any $5 Chinese watch would have survived that sort of thing for sure...
Strongly suggest getting some cheap watch with GPS function...

Depends on your budget. You could try Polar M430 or Garmin forerunner 35, both waterproof costing around U$130. But I didnt tried it, so I cant recommend. I have Garmin Fenix 5, its an expensive watch around U$450. Its suitable for any sport including kitesurf. I use it in downwind to know how many km I did and how many I still have to do. It has real time speed that you can check anytime or later, data like average speed and maximum speed. Theres several functions. Dont try apple watches or phones, its not suitable, too fragile, you will regret. The main difference between pro gear like garmin fenix or suunto ambit series its how strong it is and also battery, lasting up to 3 weeks. You receive for what you pay in this case and the difference its obvious since the moment you start to use the watches.

i use a cheap plastic cover on my apple watch and its saved it from countless falls/drops. No issues at all. they come in 3 packs for like $5 on amazon.
