Large Rider - 141 cm board?

Postby mcg1311 » Fri May 24, 2019 3:01 am

Was offered a great deal for a very lightly used 141 x 43 board. I am 6'4, 200 lbs and still very much a beginner kiter. Is it worth it to buy a board this short or will I be doing myself a disservice? Currently don't have a board of any kind..

If you don’t use a too small Kite, you should be fine.

The smaller the board the bigger the kite...and vice versa.

I have the same weight as you and ride an 18 sqm Kite with a 128x38 board.

I have friends with 230 and 2m size...they ride around 144.

You should be fine.

What's the wind you are planning to go out in? My brother is rocking 270 and rides a 135x41 board and calls me a kook everytime I tell him to try a bigger board. Also consider the water conditions you will be in. If it is really choppy you might want a board that has a bit more rocker and channels, also if you have knee problems. The xcal is a freestyle board if I am not mistaken but for 150 it is probably not a bad buy. My first board wasn't what I liked but I still used it for some time and it gave me a better idea of what I prefer and what not.

You will get different opinions.I happen to ride a 141 myself, and I am about 190lbs.

I do think the bigger boards fit with heavier and taller riders.

Ithink that sounds like a very good deal, $150 for that board and the hardware.

Go for it!

First, this board will eventually be your high wind board when you finally get around to buying a light wind board.

Second, using this board at first will be somewhat frustrating, but you will learn to be efficient. Most kiters that start out on too big a board never really develop efficiency with the kite.

Third, it is a steal if it is in good shape at that price.

Just realize that if you are progressing a bit slower, you are actually learning more. It sounds counter intuitive, but the bigger the challenge and time it takes you to overcome that challenge, the more skill you will develop to deal with that challenge. Just be patient and understand that you may be apparently passed up by other beginners on more ideal gear, but you will have an advantage over them later.

Excellent deal! Just the fins are almost worth that money...

And for this price you can always sell it if you found something better!

No disservice, I'm 5'9" 200lbs my 141 SS crisis is my 6m-10m board and my 149cm SS Glide is my 12m-14m board. Started on the 141 SS Crisis and still using it.
