Duotone trust bar 24m on a Gong strutless?

Postby Jvwesemael » Tue Sep 03, 2019 2:56 pm

Hey all,

Anybody have experience using a 24m trustbar on a Gong strutless 10m kite?

I measured the position of the Y with the trustbar and it is 6 meters [measuring from the depower cord]. The Gong states 2 meters on their site. That is a large difference I think, or not?

I also read that flying a high V bar on a low V designed kite does not matter as much as the kite does not deform as much [opposite is not good as a high V designed kite needs the stability of the high V to stay in form]. So that would indicate that in this case I should be fine....

Next to that am not sure on the safety, can't see on the site what kind of flagout Gong uses. Duotone is single line.

Thanks for your reaction, and hope to find someone with some experience as well!

Jeroen

Not an expert by any means however:
Would it theoretically not be the same as putting a 4m line extension on the gong bar setup?
Unless gong is saying you should never do that it should probably be fine.
Maybe the top end will suffer a bit since line extensions usually are usually used with light wind and forces on the kite will be considerably smaller.

Gong is single front safety release...
Just try the bar with the kite. It will fly, no danger in trying. Perhaps it will be suboptimal, but likely it will fly fine. With a 17m going it will likely have a more negative impact...

I'm not experienced with the Gong kites per se, but I can confirm that their control bar is a Low(er)-V, single-line flagging, 4-line bar that they even state is "compatible with 90% of the kites on the market."

The compatibility of a Duotone Trust bar is a classic YMMV situation with a Low-V designed kite. Unless you take the time to test it and/or be prepared to fiddle and dial in the bridle attachments to compensate for the High-Y, the odds that the Duotone bar will function with or even improve your kite's performance is questionable.

Hopefully someone can chime in with some real experience and details on how it worked (or not) and if they had to do any mods to get it to function.

I have a Gong strutless, 8m kite and I fly it on Slingshot bar which is a low V. I had to add about 4 inch pigtails to the center lines, so it flies properly. You probably have to play with pigtails too. Let me know what you end up with.

Hi Alex,

Thanks. How did you notice he was not flying well? and How do you know what to change when he does not fly well? How did you know to change the pigtails on the center lines?

Thanks.

Jeroen

I had the same problem, rear lines where to long.
I made a knot on each rear line connector. Problem solved.

When I tried to fly it for the first time, I could not steer at all because back lines are too long. So I made center lines longer, because I also had to change from knots to loops, I just added pigtails. It's just tries and errors method, when the kite is at 12 and I pull the bar all the way in, I like the kite to backstall a little, that how I tune my kites.
