So my chicken loop broke + advice

Postby gator1 » Tue Dec 10, 2019 12:58 pm

At the top of a high jump.

At home I pulled out the dyneema out of the PU tube and was surprised at how much sand found its way in there. I thought it was too snug for sand to get in but it does and grinds away.

If you get any new PU tubing kite gear, seal it with silicone sealant. Bathroom stuff.

Can we get a brand? Time used?

My hook wears through my North CL releases, then sand makes it's way in through the wear holes, and snap. No point in replacing the line if the PU tube is worn through because it will break again in like 6-7sessions. I would love a solution as I am on my last replacement North CL release, and cannot justify giving North what they charge for just that line.

If you never unhook don't use a CL. Simples.
simples
/ˈsɪmp(ə)lz/
exclamation
INFORMAL•BRITISH
used to convey that something is very straightforward.

The PU tube on my Core bar recently got some small pinholes, probably because of sand getting into the hole in the bar where it passes.
I am thinking about trying to cover these with silicone to prevent sand from getting in, but I am unsure what kind of silicone would fit best for covering holes in PU?

Used about 4 seasons

The PU tubing was fine, no wear at all. So the sand somehow finds its way in at the end or the tubes and collects inside.

I no longer feel safe do anything too far out at sea.

Well, considering your only ever a 1mm thick line snap away from a swim that’s probably a good reality check.

Have always preferred uncovered depower lines and have some misgivings about the industry’s push for ever more covered lines and now internal bar mechanisms in order to look more commercially polished. Nothing wrong with naked rope.

The benefits of seeing the wear with your own eyes.

Even naish chicken loops snap when they look fine

For some blizzare reason they stopped sewing them at each end now?! Why would u do that!!!

I feel so lucky to have had several chicken loop and depower line snaps occur near the shore in Cape Town, because I have done some silly things like following the Volvo Ocean Race boats far out into the bay at which point I am completely alone and would likely die in the cold water with the SEaster blowing me off-shore. So now I have a PLB, a small one from ACR, in my lifevest pocket.

I use 4mm dyneema to splice a new line (brands usually use 3mm), than sleeve it with 6mm PU tube, than sleeve that with 12mm PU tube (diameters are top of mind, can check if needed).

Line fits super snug and around 4 mm of PU protection.

Easy to pull the rope and check the line once in a while. Also easy to replace if needed.

Bet you dollars to donuts that you'd worn a hole in the PU tube with the chicken loop hook. I've broken a few just letting them wear through. Some were sealed at the top too...
