Is kite boarding/ kitesurfing a boardsport or a kite sport?

Postby windfreak74 » Sat May 23, 2020 1:08 am

I remember reading an interview from Shannon Best sharing his knoledge about this topic. are boards more important than kites? are kites more important than boards? what makes the most difference in your riding, a new board or a new kite??
is the surface of contact more important than the traction portion?
with the masification of foils and the new lightness of kites definetely change the way we ride!
what has made the most diference in your riding?
what are your thoughts?

I think boards are a bigger deal than kites. Foiling changed the game for those of us in wind challenged locations. I used to be the guy on huge kites all the time now that I started foiling I'm the guy with the smallest kite and having a blast while doing it!

foil wing trumps board and board trumps kite! kind of rock paper and scissors! hahahaha!
well the thing is a 7 headed snake!! new foil kit needs a new kite! smaller ,bigger! moe gear or less gear?
really funny part is that kid are kitelooping foils with foils and handle passes with foils !!cant remember the rider but my compass is busted! now with the foil thing surfing is getting bigger and bigger ! no more kite required get the wing thingy!! oh wait just saw another video of a kid handle passing a wing?wtf!!!!!! :o

Leaving gear out of the picture I would say it is more of a board sport.
I think board technique has way more skill required then the kite control that is involved.
Eg a beginner can learn moving the kite around pretty quickly but getting on a board, going up wind etc requires way more time.
Same for something like jumping, most of the skill to get higher is board related not kite steering.

Or to put it in another way: I would say that I have expert kite control (spend many years flying power kites when I was young) but I am certainly not an expert kiteboarder

With a good kite I can do all my tricks.
Can’t do it with a bad kite.
Board? Doesn’t matter.

It's whatever you want it to be. You can be a kiter who boards or a boarder who kites, or both.

A crap kite will ruin your fun, and so will a crap board. You don't need the "best" gear. You do need to be the "best" at using your gear.

Adding hydrofoils into the mix confuses things. Yes the change to a hydrofoil will massively turbocharge your sessions. But foiling is about as different to kiteboarding as kiteboarding is to windsurfing. Yes they sort of do the same thing, but they're not the same thing at all.

Totally agree. Both kite and board are essential pieces, and the right mix is key. I have a variety of kites from old school 5 line C kites to single skin Peak4 with loads of others in between. There is just as much difference in my boards, from rockerred wake set up to surfboards to hydrofoil. In 20 knots I can ride any number of combinations, but there are obvious miss matches and each board has its best suited kites that really lets it shine. In my head, Conditions prompt board choice which determines kite selection.

It's both you can't kiteboard without a kite and a board.
