It’s a surf sport 😉
Kitesurf used to be named Flysurf...Combination of water and air, that's all I like about it

If you take an experienced kite pilot, and give him a board, in my opinion he will learn a lot faster to kitesurf,
compared to an experienced (wake)boarder, who would be given a kite. I know loads of windsurfers who were
thinking it was easy to learn kitesurf, prior to give it a try.

The kite is all what makes our sport so different from others sports, allowing many different type of board and use.
For me, a kite sport, definitely

I remember piecing together used windsurfing kit as a teen. Mismatched everything! Wave sail, slalom board, mast was too long, boom barely fit. Mast base was probably my best individual part and it had no impact on performance! Had loads of fun, but never excelled. Eventually switched to all wave oriented stuff and it all got sooo much better. The preference for carve over speed has been with me ever since and was key to many subsequent decisions. You might like speed or big air and will make your gear choices accordingly. I don’t think I would like Toby’s 18m and short flat tt very much and I’m pretty sure he would not like a 5m Peak for more than teaching on land. Not sure if he has spent any time on a hydrofoil. Yet both of us are considered kiters. The kite is the common link but at this stage they are every bit as different as the boards. But it’s no different in cycling....diversified gear leads to completely different activities.... still cycling.

I disagree. How much surfing are you doing in lagoons?

it’s a wind sport

It's a kite sport.
You can kite on a twintip, surfboard, foilboard, buggy, skateboard, whatever but you can't kite without a kite.

You can surf on wave, with the help of a kite.
Then it is also a surfsport.
You can race around a course with sailing rules.
Then it is also a sailing sport (although many will disagree).

But you can never take away the kite from the kite sport.
The kite is the definiton of the sport.

I think it depends on the discipline.I consider it a board sport , the kite is just a pulling device.I can get behind the wake boat, go to the cable park or use a kite, all means to an end. Each has its differences, kiting the easiest due to angle of kite helping for more airtime to complete moves, followed by the cable then the boat.
