That's an exciting comment there at the end of that video; they'll know immediately when they're on-speed and point for what they've been training to whether that's competitive or not. At the same time, if you're the fast one, you now have to worry about revealing your secret formula to someone who might squeak out a big engineering advantage based on that discovery during live racing.

Me too!! The engineering in these boats and (whole different set of challenges) in the Vendee boats is just amazing. A VERY long time ago I worked in a group (I did control systems) where the aero team was moonlighting for one of the AC teams doing early CFD. Something about control systems engineers but lots of us have a body clock that means we start work 10-12 and work till late at night. This was when the aero team was working and so it was fun to be around them. I've been hooked ever since.

Another interesting race with hydrofoil sailboats is the Vendee Globe around the world race which has just started. There are 33 boats competing this year, each with a single sailor who sails non stop around the world.. which takes at least 75 days. These are all 60 foot monohulls, many with hydrofoils like the Americas Cup boats, but these boats are much more rugged. The race is run every four years and on average 55% of the boats manage to finish. It is fun to follow the live updates.

https://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/tracking-map

The leader (up to recently) is now drifting in the Atlantic trying to make some structural repairs by himself (race rules prohibit any outside assistance). And the new current leader had to climb his 28 meter high mast yesterday (while in the middle of the ocean) to fix something. Another boat has already dropped out when it lost its mast. There's always something interesting going on.

Here is what the foils look like on some of the boats.
The fleet has already been confronted with winds over 40 knots and rough seas.
