replacement Suunto Ambit2s gps watch?

Postby guthrie » Sat Oct 10, 2020 5:07 pm

I have loved my Suunto Ambit2-s GPS watch for kiting, but they are now orphaning it and switching to new software.

Any recommendations on a good replacement - the Suunto 5, 7, ..??
Or others?
I have used Garmin (long ago) before, and their software was not so wonderful - maybe better now?!

I have been using the Suunto Spartan Ultra now for a few years and it is very good.

Amazing price - if recent, probably because of this change.
"This watch, including customizations and settings, is supported by an app and website combo called Movescout. Suunto is migrating to a new smartphone app called Suunto, which supports customization of new watches but only supports activity uploads from Ambit3 watches.

This is important because Suunto is shutting down the Movescout service THIS SUMMER. The ability to customize your sports, watch faces, and watch settings will disappear. They already pulled the Movescout app from the Android play store in preparation for this shutdown. They are not going to add this service to the new Suunto app.

The Ambit3 looks like a new, current generation watch, but Suunto considers it obsolete and the end of life is coming in just a few short months. Because all of the customization, apps, and features are managed by a cloud service, all of the functionality will be taken away.

As I understood it, they were shutting down the movescount app (never used it) but not the website...? It's a bit confusing. Ambit3 seems to be the bottom end :)

Lost my Ambit3 this week (very sad, I was getting quite used to it) so now I'm shopping around for a replacement. I tried a Garmin Instinct today but it didn't feel right. I'm considering a Suunto 5 or...

I had a talk with Suunto at their Booth in the Boot Show in Düsseldorf this year. The new Watches are more geared towards "normal" users. This means that the GPS accuracy and functionality will be greatly reduced. Basically, if you want accurate GPS and Cloud data, then your only real option are the Garmins or Polars at the moment. It's a bit of a shame as I had quite a few well working apps programmed for my Ambit 3.

Yeah I saw that. No dealers in Japan :( but Amazon has some interesting deals -- if you're not fussed about color.

For $200 you can still get Ambit3 and Spartan Trainer.
For $250 can get a Spartan Sport which is very temping and
For $300 you can get a Suunto 5.

I liked the large chunky solid feel of the Ambit3. I'm not sure I like the idea of a touchscreen though...

And as much as I fiddled with the additional apps on the A3 I really was only interested in the logging of the sessions track, speed, distance, time and max speed.

EDIT: Oh wow, just in the time I typed this and decided to get the Spartan, the price jumped $130...?!?!?! Amazon-wide too. Goddamnit
