ION Quick Lock - new safety standard?

Postby Toby » Thu Nov 19, 2020 12:52 pm

I just saw this new hook...with a lock.
For those who don't unhook (like me), this looks like a new safety feature for our sport.

What do you guys think...and anyone already used it?

Looks nice. Now we will see chickenfinger free bars coming next if this will stick :) But this makes sense.

I wonder if the "lock" 100% prevents a line getting accidentally hooked.
It is not super clear to me based on the picture/video.
(e.g. with a Hindenburg situation it can happen with a regular hook resulting in a death loop)

Now if they would just combine it with a similar spreader system as the stealth/unity bar it would be perfect.
Although I just moved to mostly foiling so using a surf setup at the moment.

It's kinda similar to what Mystic has in their rope spreader bar with that micro loop. Still good that companies are creating more choices for the riders.

That clip on top locks it? Still a line catcher.

Looks great. I think the hook of any form is not great. Yes, we live with it but to be fair it caused many injuries.

I had the chance to try the hook on the beach and the mechanism felt quite clumsy. I doubt that you could handle it with gloves on. Also, it is a line catcher like downunder said. Other than that it works quite well I guess. Is it a game changer? I don´t know.

It´s a good addition, but I am not sure if this is the right direction for hooked in. What exactly do we need a chicken loop for, anyway? In my opinion, companies should consider getting rid both of the hook and the huge release mechanisms and introduce something smaller and neat like a Snapshackle that is fixed directly to your harness but that you use to release the kite. This would not only be cheaper, cleaner and safer, but - even more important - you could have way more depower (a few more centimeters in fact!) because the bar would be closer to you without all that nonsense under the bar.

I think it’s time for hooks to leave.

The mystic surf rope slider that can be used as a slider or fixed is I think the way to go if you don’t unhook.

I think the quick releases need to catch up. Sure there are rope slider loops and free ride loops but the whole mechanism could be smaller.

I think instead of a loop it should be a fixed low friction fair lead ring that is part of the harness and attached via a rope to the harness.

Remember the slingshot surefire spreader? The ion hook is like back to the future.

This product looks fantastic. Anybody take the plunge yet and have any riding experience / reviews on it?

Agree with you.

Hooks etc. are fine for those who want to unhook, but for the >95% (?) who never do they are simply a pointless legacy complication.

If you’re not going to unhook and are going to reinvent the wheel, please don’t make things more complicated than they need to be. Why have moving parts with sand everywhere?
