where to get tube for covering chicken loop rope

Postby Foil » Fri Apr 16, 2021 6:08 am

using 6mm spliced dyneema for chicken loop, but cant seem to find the black or any colour plastic tube to cover it, found some flexible clear tubing from B+Q hardware department, it fitted great after dipping it in boiling water to get it over the rope but its to soft and wont last many sessions at all, and its a bit grippy being not very hard, so might stick a little on a powered quick release, searched ebay for that tube found on chicken loops or even the thick depower lines, no luck, maybe it not knowing what its actually called, as plastic tube is no use as a search option.
anyone know?? :?: :thumb:

Pneumatic PU tube

That are the magical search words, there is a different hardness between brands so it can be worth to try a few different sources before buying more than a few meters. SMC is on the soft end. Have to look up what brand my current ones are, bought them here:
https://www.fhtperslucht.nl/pagina/polyurethaan-slangen

But every country should have multiple stores as Pneumatic tubes are widely used in various industries / workshops.

Get it at the plastic store online. Use whatever size you want. If you are using 3mm line that will be doubled for the splice that's around 5mm inner diameter (it's not 6mm because pi r squared)

Or Again ... eBay “nylon tube”

If I was using 3mm line I’d go for 4mm id. Theoretically you want: diameter * square root of 2 (Ie 1.414)
3mm gives ~4.24mm. But you want it to be a v tight fit to stop sand getting in. As others have said softening the tube in hot water helps when you want to pull an oversize line through.

Most kite bars are standard PU tubing (Polyurethane), the ebay tubing you ordered Colin is perfect. Wet the Dyneema rope with water & Washing Up Liquid before pulling through the tubing, this lubricates the rope but washes out later in sea water. You want the same internal diameter rope as the PU, ie - 4mm Dyneema can be pulled through 4mm PU tubing fairly easily, you can even get 5mm through 4mm tubing but that's challenging. Definitely do not go down in size, using a 3mm rope in a 4mm tube allows sand, salt etc to get in and abrade the rope inside the tubing.
