Asymmetric 2013 Neo 7m

Postby jbrodin » Thu May 13, 2021 2:25 pm

I have a 7 m 2013 Neo that I have had for a few years. I really like it. It came with some added knots on the right hand side attatchment pigtails, shortening them by approximately 7cm. I tried undoing them, and the kite was leaning to the left. I put the knots back, and it was fine again. The previous owner says he bought it as is. All the bridals are fully symmetrical othervise. I guess I can just live by "don't fix it if it ain't broken", but I am curious. Any ideas? Have you encountered this before?

Entirely normal I would say. I bought an old Ozone Reo the other day and I was “gob smacked” when I found that I did not need to adjust the pigs to get it to fly how I want on even line lengths. Most preowned kites and plenty of new kites that I have obtained needed adjustments too, but usually symmetrically in the new kites. It only takes a small change in the airflow over the two halves to cause an asymmetric turning moment.

It is just part of any cloth wing sport and expectations should reflect that imho.

PS That’s not to say you shouldn’t investigate the cause of asymmetry because it could be a sign of something letting go!

Just to qualify my post, if you are paying top dollar for the expensive high end kites I think you are entitled to expect it to work out of the box. I hardly ever go down that route and so forgot to include this aspect.

If you have not played with old foils yet you still have a lot more tuning and asymmetry problems to experience LoL!

I have several used Flysurfer foils that I have spend many a frustrating hour tuning ;).

It’s another “me too” situation. I have one that seems to have become so porous it will not stay inflated in the low end of its wind range despite my tuning efforts. Flaps like a bird but it is old and I suspect it has seen a lot of sunshine.
