Can anyone recommend an insurance company that will insure my gear here in the USA?
I live in the USA, but I originally lived in the UK, so I am paranoid about theft from my car. Particularly when on a road trip to East or South coasts, I pretty much stuff everything into my SUV and have to park it outside wherever I travel / stay.
I had a policy with American Family (which required painful itemization and receipts), but now a year later they have declined to continue my coverage.
I wondered whether any of you has come across a specialist company that understands our needs?

Your comprehensive car insurance would normally cover theft of property from the car. Check with your agent.
Tell them sports equipment - a good set of golf clubs would add up to more than kite gear. A good bike is worth more.
Don’t confuse them with kites, use golf in your questions.
If they’re being weird - move on to another company.
But yes, keep receipts and pictures for documentation purposes

why not just lock your car?
if you wish to piss away your $$ you coulD just send a check of $1000 to me.
..no need to keep receipts or itemize anything
while we don't pay on any claims...you can at least feel good and less paranoid as you write that check.
just wire the funds to i-find-this-brit-preoccupation-with insuring-everything-under-the-sun-slightly-entertaining, LLC,
...i understand your needs.
you could write it as a "charity" since 100% of it will go toward "supporting" single moms in cartagena....

I once had a $5000 triathlon bike stolen from my rental vehicle in San Francisco. The SF police weren't overly helpful, but I drove to the local station and got a written police report (window was smashed, bike travel box was left empty.....I had to compete in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon on a rental bike.....and to add insult to injury, United Airlines charged me a full bicycle fare to transport my empty travel box back to the East Coast). My homeowner's insurance covered the bicycle theft, minus a deductible.
This is from Allstate's website:
"Comprehensive coverage does not cover theft of your personal items from your vehicle. Depending on your insurer, there may be an optional coverage available within your auto policy for personal property. But, the personal property coverage in a homeowners, renters or condo insurance policy helps cover your belongings, even when they're away from your place. Personal property coverage has a deductible and a coverage limit. In fact, your policy may even state that coverage limits for your personal property are lower when they're away from your place. This is sometimes referred to as "off-premises coverage." Read your policy or ask your agent so you know how much coverage you have for your stuff while it's in your car."

Car insurance never covers personal property stolen from a vehicle in the US. Only a homeowner/renters insurance will cover property theft, subject to limits (normally $1,000 for all sports equipment) minus a deductible ($500+). In other words, almost no coverage for kite equipment left in a car and stolen.
One can ask for special property riders but these are both expensive and increase probability of coverage being dropped. There are also different rules in every state and potential exclusions in non-residential states (see travel to California where thefts under $1,000 are not considered a crime).

This is a popular myth perpetuated by right wing media, and it's simply not true.
Like many states, CA distinguishes between felonies and misdemeanors based on the value of the property stolen. If the stolen property's value is less than $950, it's a misdemeanor. If it's over $950, the theft is a felony. Both misdemeanors and felonies are criminal (i.e., punishable "crimes"), even in CA.

I always thought it was the other way around. Anything above 1 billion is not considered a crime

Yeah, it's considered a "crime" as in too sweet a kiteboarding trick or too hot of a bikini on the beach!
Whether or not the authorities consider something a crime is of no consequence if there are NO CONSEQUENCES. Under a $1000, and even if they will let you file a report, they won't do anything beyond that. Even if the perp is caught doing a +$1000 theft at the same time, the prosecutor won't charge them with what they stole from you.
Right wing media???? Come on! There are hard core left wing shop owners and regular citizens that are dealing with this every day in cali. And they are speaking out about it too. Does that make them "right wing"?
