Non corroding hook knife?

Postby purdyd » Fri Sep 17, 2021 3:18 pm

It seems every hook knife I have has an aluminum body which eventually oxidizes.

Is there anything out there with maybe a nylon body and two stainless blades?

Decathlon has a double-sided plastic knife for diving with stainless blades, very cheap, I'm using it seems to be fine

How does it oxidize? It's painted aluminum so how does the water water get through the paint. The trilobite is a sick knife.

100% I have one on each side of my harness...I change the blade whenever it starts to show signs of rust.

I wouldn't kite with anything else, just get this one and make sure to rinse it off after sessions to avoid the blades corroding.

Get a hook knife with either a ceramic or titanium blade. A 316 stainless blade might work a while, but any 440 stainless will rapidly corrode.
There are many version of this polycarbonate handle knife with a ceramic blade.

My guess is that it is the stainless screws and blade in the aluminum that creates the problem. Galvanic corrosion.

The stainless blades are not the problem.

I like the look of that nylons body with a ceramic blade.

Thanks for the suggestions. Are there any double bladed knives like the dakine or mystic?

do you have a special rinse routine? i have had two eezy cuts trilobites that i take out of the sheath, rinse and air dry after every season and they still corrode.

also, beware the screws and nuts holding the two pieces together. they can back out and disappear. better loctite them.

Don't overthink it. Hook knives are cheap. Inspect the knife every now and then and replace it every year or two.

I wouldn't get too excited about the cutters listed above. They might be fine for diving where everything happens in slow motion. Not sure they're appropriate for a high speed emergency. They have a single blade with a plastic edge to push the line onto the blade. If you get a bunch of lines in there the outer lines won't get cut.

The hook knives sold for kiting (and skydiving and paragliding) have two blades in a vee configuration. The lines get sliced by the cutters from both sides. They can still get clogged if you have too much line in them but they're still better than a single cutting blade. If you have lines bunched in there you can yank the knife around a bit and the blades on both sides slice into the lines.

More importantly, all the harnesses I have used for the past several years have a knife pocket under the hook. They take the standard kitesurf knives. I'd rather always have a knife handy than have to mess around with accessory pockets and special maintenance regimes.
