Postby Aberdovy kiter » Mon Sep 27, 2021 8:02 am

Anybody own one of these? What's the boot capacity like for a usual days kiting, 1 board 2 kites wetsuit etc, haven't had a chance to visit a dealer, if the boot capacity isn't up to it I'll have to rethink, no model y in the uk at moment as far as i know..

I see lots of kiters with a model3 here.
Drop down (one of) the rear seats or get a fold-able board and should fit without issues.

Loads of room in a Tesla 3 compared to some of the cars I've owned in the past. You've even got two boots (trunks). My wife used to hate it when she took my car for a work trip and I took her MX5 to the beach, as her car would pong for days afterwards in the winter. Even in an MX5 I could fit 3 kites, twin tip, foil board and wetsuit. Seen people fit a complete set of windsurf kit in an MX5 so you aren't going to have any problems fitting it in a tesla.

The real question is - 'Are you willing to fill a new car full of sea water?' - because its going to be wet eventually.

I bought set of rubber mats for car & trunk.
Main issue is to fit board, I have split NHP bo often can't be bother to take it apart so I put it inside car. It's 142cm and no way it will fit inside trunk and with two child sits folding rear seat is a pain.
My foil board is even longer hence its end up on rear sits and this creates a little more mess but I try to rinse boards before putting them back.

The bootspace is perfectly suitable for transporting kiting equipment imo. I often go with a buddy and can easily fit 2 twintips + 2-3 kites + 2 harnesses + 2 wetsuits etc. You just need to fold one of the back seats and can easily load up your twintips. Plus you can charge your car at most of the kite spots here in NL so thats a nice bonus imo! Did purchase aftermarket rubber mats for trunk + car as well to try and reduce the sand + seawater. No matter how careful i try to be, the car is always full of sand anyway :)

How about towing a small trailer with your gear in it? I would be reluctant to putting wet salty gear in a luxury car, especially an electric one.

My friend has a 3 and he keeps his wetsuit in the front storage with a little plastic tray that fits it. I would not worry about a little water in there, I'm sure they have thought of the occasional customer who uses it as an ice chest or to transport his sea turtles. It probably either has a drain or is watertight.

I don't like the car much for kiting as I'd be scared to damage or stain it, but his is a very light interior that doesn't help either.
